A battered coin, but with magnificent Kufic calligraphy. It's from 1010 AD, that's the Islamic year 400 AH.

6207 Qarak AR dirh Quz Ordu 400H.jpg
AR dirham Qarakhanids, Quz Ordu (= Balasaghun), 400 AH = 1010 AD, Nasr al-Milla qarakhaqan Ahmad b. Ali and Nasr. 25 mm, 3.15 gr.

By the way, I saw that gorgeous Baroque gold coin of Pope Clement XI (1717), posted five days ago by @panzerman. There is an 'H' under the bust of the pope, I'm sure this coin was engraved by Ottone Hamerani of the Hamerani dynasty of Papal engravers.

Is there a name for that area of the denticles on the reverse 8 to 9 o'clock position? Referring to the 1717 3 pence above.

I don't know of a specific name - I would suggest it was caused by a section of the die rim breaking off.

There is something called a "cud", not the kind the cow chews, something on a coin. I have one somewhere with a buggered rim like yours, sort of. Was that 1717 3 pence made on a screw press? I recall that type being used in the Netherlands about the same time.

Did you dig that one, Brian? If so, awesome! I've seen some like that come out of the dirt down here in GA.

Here is one I had from the same date. Non-dug by me, though it was almost certainly found in the 1869 Randall Hoard.
