I didn't return them to the mint because it's 2006 buffalo not 2008 buffalo, 2 years too late to return... Also sold some proof eagles and 2006 W eagles.. Still have a bunch of half ounce, quarter ounce 2006 w eagles, some 2006 20th anniversary gold sets, and a platinum 2006 w unc set. thought about selling the the platinum set and the 2006 w unc gold coins at the time, maybe should have sold them too. gold eagles and buffalo doesn't seem to have much premium over melt.

I have the original in mint packaging Burnished 2006 W 1/10 and 1/4 Platinum Eagles and have been considering selling them, but there hasn't been a well defined pattern on Ebay so that I can have an idea of what to expect. Have any ideas?

will those fractionals be going down in price? Anyone know? I'd love to pick up a couple of those but not at current prices.
A quarter oz for $290 when gold is $785 an oz? maybe in the aftermarket?

I know this is mentioned often about getting these coins on the open market for less than melt, but I just don't see anyone selling a coin or coins for less than what they bought them for unless they were completely desperate. If anyone finds a place where they can buy the buffalo coins for less than melt or at current melt prices please let us know because I will buy them up.

One, the fractional buffalos haven't been on sale that long.
Two, when they went on sale the collectors were ticked and the premium over spot.
Three, since then the price of gold has declined significantly making the premium even greater.

Now all of these would tend to reduce the number of coins ordered from the mint. This COULD mean a mintage low enouh that there would not be enough coins to satify aftermarket demand. I would not be too encouraged about the possibility for getting these in the aftermarket cheaper than issue price. Especially if gold stablizes or contines to fall, and the mint does not drop their price.

platinum have gone down almost $600 an ounce, might be too late to sell. Didn't pay attention to platinum prices, I should've sold mine too.

I sold my platinum at $1875 -1950 with an average cost of $770 from several ounces in 1997-1999. Would have sold at $2300 after S. Africa cut production, but got greedy as I thought the sky was the linit. After the fall back to $1800 I told my self if it hit $2000 I would sell and did. Overall my profit is very nice and if I sold my remaining 2006 W 1/10 and 1/4 for a $1 I would still be doing very well. In short I do pay attention to the price of Au & Pt. I held on to the 1/10 and 1/4 oz because of the extreme low mintage and at this point am not to worried about falling Pt prices. From what I gather the 1/10 oz still has a approx price level of $400 and the 1/4 $900, but it is a thin market and prices are volatile. At this point with falling Pt prices my only concern is 2008 will become the new key date kicking 2006 to spot. In addition the 2009 "unity" theme is dog ugly and may be an even greater lower mintage. Even if it is low there are many others to follow that may be even uglier. The 2006 reverse is somewhat classical to me and I really like it, but the 2008 design compared to the Eagle/owl combo is enticing and depending what happens by year end I may just have to buy a 1/10.

Those of us that buy "bullion" coinage from the Mint, whether it be silver, gold or platinum, should not buy it with the intention of making any kind of profit or we will be surely disappointed. We should buy it because we like the coinage and nothing else. I can sit here all day and kick myself for buying the buffalo coins at the prices that I bought them for, but what good would that do. The mint won't change their prices just because the market took a downturn. If the value of the precious metals goes up, then that is just a bonus for us collectors. We must realize that the value of these coins most likely will never be determined by supply and demand, but rather by the value of that particular metal at any given time. Who knows.... maybe twenty years from now we will be the ones laughing all the way to the bank.
