Bullion coins are worth a small premium above melt because the fact that they are coined means the buyer is also buying certification of the weight and purity compared to, say, a vile of gold flakes. I'm sure the Mint will extract their pound of flesh, but not from me. It is occasionally possible to buy gold coins below melt value. This seems to happen more with gold than silver.

Although I have been waiting for the fractionals to come out I think I'm going to hold off on this for now. I've got a hunch a person might be better off getting these on the aftermarket side. Not saying it will be cheaper but if the price of gold goes up I think the spread on the premium will shrink.

having just rescued a major portion of my life's savings from IndyMac Bank and the FDIC, I figure I can afford to treat myself to a few of these sets- it feels like found money at this point!

    STOP THE MADNESS!

Watching MSNBC and they are talking about the big downturn of gold. One of the investors they interviewed expected gold to drop even further before we see an upswing. This is crazy! So what do we do????? Do we return all our Buffalo sets in protest of the value of gold?????? The mint dosen't care. They are not going to lower the prices of their gold sets.

didnt i tell you not to buy the buffalo and sell your old coins. The buffaloes were always a losing proposition if you want gold to rise just wait for a few months.

I don't buy coins for an investment.... I buy them because I like them... and you know how much I like those buffaloes.... Plus, I can always return them and get my money back.

I sold my proof 2006 buffalo, unc 2006 buffalo and some other gold bullions last month for melt price.

Why didn't you return them to the mint? I looked forward to the proofs, but after receiving one I thought with the textured fields they looked to much like gold leafing. Just returned it and I may be out $15, but it beats sitting on something dropping in value that I do not care for.
