    These are neat for their combination of Arabic script with Christian imagery.

    AV tari, Roger II of Sicily 1130-1154. Obv. Cross with IC-XC / NI-KA ('Jesus Wins'). Rev. Kufic text in two rings around a bull's eye with several dots. 12 mm. 1.38 gr.

    I have dreams of one day putting together a guide on reading the Arabic dating on these coins by counting the minims which are visible on the edge (since most of them are clipped and lack the whole inscription). I don’t even know if it is possible, but I lack the time to try to find out.

    There are some handsome medieval Sicilian gold coins in this thread :jawdrop:! The only medieval Sicilian coin I have is the silver pierreale struck at the Messina Mint, under Frederick III, House of Barcelona, 1296-1337, pictured below. There is no trace of Arabic on this coin.

    That is a beauty Al! I am after the AV Pierreale of Constanza and Pedro III of Aragon:)

    supposedly these are around 68% gold, so i had to pay almost 2x melt price :angelic:
