Once again I am honored to host an ancient coin related game among friends on this fantastic forum. This will be the second time we have played this particular game so if you have any confusion on how the game works after reading the below you are welcome to read through 2017’s version to get a better idea. So without further ado let’s have some coin-fun. How the Game Works I have enlisted the participation of four well known CoinTalk members (plus myself). Each of us has submitted a photo of a coin that we have never posted to the forum along with a brief description of why we included the coin in our collections. See below for the list of members who have agreed to participate. @dougsmit @Al Kowsky @Valentinian @Curtisimo @Parthicus The goal of the game will be for members to try and match each coin with its owner (one of the 5 members listed above). There will be a separate thread for each coin posted every 3 days and each thread will produce a winner. The winner’s name will be chosen at random from the participants in the thread but you can earn multiple chances to win based on the following rules. Guess who the owner of the coin is and give a reason why you think that. (Ex.: I believe that this coin belongs to Curtisimo because he owns pink socks and thinks a toboggan is a hat.) This is the minimum requirement for entry into the drawing. Please include a reason with your guess! Anyone who posts a photo of an ancient coin along with their guess (related or not) will receive an extra chance to win. Anyone who gives a particularly well thought out or amusing reason why you guessed a certain person will receive an extra chance to win. Anyone who guesses correctly will receive an extra chance to win. Anyone who is a young numismatist (age 18 or younger) will receive an extra chance to win. If you are a YN please say so in your entry post. In total there can be up to 5 chances to win for each member in each thread! The Prizes Prizes will be awarded once all 5 threads have closed and we have 5 total winners. Each winner will be able to choose which of the below prizes he or she wants. The order of choosing will be based on which winner had the most correct matches throughout the game (so it’s best to participate in all threads!). In the event of a tie the number of chances earned will serve as the tie breaker. All coin prizes this year will be a mystery until the winners choose which prize they want. However, each coin will have a short riddle to help winners make their picks when the time comes. The winner can either choose to reveal the coin upon choosing or wait for it to arrive to find out. Good fun! Mystery Prize #1 – Provided by @Orielensis Riddle: A celestial diety from the east. Mystery Prize #2 – Provided by @Ryro Riddle: Even the wonders of K’met could not cure his wonderlust. Mystery Prize #3 – Provided by @lordmarcovan Riddle: A choice prize that Janus would approve of. Mystery Prize #4 – Provided by @Curtisimo Riddle: A city named for a sister, struck reverses in the spirit of justice. Prize #5 – Provided by @Curtisimo
I would also like to take some time to give a special thanks to a few CoinTalk members that volunteered to provide prizes for the game. I was thinking I would provide 2, possibly 3, prizes this year which would mean I would have had to change the winner selection process up a bit from last time. With the three volunteers we will be able to have a prize per round just like the 2017 game! As such I would like to extend my gratitude to the following coin-friends. @Ryro @Orielensis @lordmarcovan You guys are all class acts. This is a great community . Game Schedule Assuming there are no surprises I intend to post Coin #1 on Wednesday afternoon of October 23rd. I will leave the guessing period open for 3 days once the coin is posted. The thread for Coin #2 will be posted after the guessing period for Coin #1 closes and so on. If needed, I can adjust the schedule accordingly as we go on. Thanks for viewing, everybody. I look forward to seeing you all playing the game over the next two weeks.
Curtis, Thanks for putting this game together !. Although I can't participate I'm anxious to see some action & winners .
This should be fun. Looking forward to seeing people's guesses and the reasoning behind them Very cool of everyone involved.
Epic, I'll definitely dust off my amateur knowledge of ancients coins and see what I can do. Is there much of a strategy when it comes to this?
I would say yes. There is strategy on both the player and volunteer side. The volunteers don’t want to be too obvious with the coin they select for the game and give themselves up easily but at the same time they have to briefly explain why they liked it which makes it harder to disguise their identity. On the player side it helps to get to know a little about each player’s collection and writing style. Each of the 4 volunteers have been posting some excellent educational write ups along with there coins for years. I highly recommend you do a search for a few of their threads and go back and read a few. If you end up getting to see some great content you missed the first time then you are a winner in the game whether you get a prize or not I look forward to your participation in the game. Good luck.
Okay everyone we are officially underway with Round 1! I know our centurion mascot is excited Here is the link to Coin #1. Coin #2 to follow on Saturday afternoon. Coin #1 – GTCTer 2019 (Guess the Owner of This Coin)
Game Update We have only one round left to go in our game ladies and gentleman. In the 5th round I will invite all those who want to do so to guess the owner of the coins from all 5 rounds. To help participants review their previous guesses for that purpose I have put together a table of everyone's guesses so far. Please let me know if you made a guess in one of the threads and I failed to register it above. I will go back and double check my info before the drawing but it is always helpful to have some extra eyes on the data as well. Round 5 will post tomorrow afternoon! In the meantime feel free to head over to the Round 4 thread and get your guess registered if you haven't done so. Remember that there will be a winner from every round!
Terrance, I only see where you commented on the first thread? I am only counting the voters that commented and gave a reason for their guess per the game rules.
