I did a quick metal detecting hunt before heading out to my vacation at Puerto Rico. I didn't find anything major but it is always good to find an old Wheat Cent.... If I pick up any new coins in PR I will share with you..
Really nice Wheatie for a dug one. I hit one site here on St. Simons Island where the Wheaties came up like that- didn't even look like ground finds. Got a nice 1919 that way, and shallow- like half an inch or less in the ground. Now go find some actual Puerto Rican coins with young Alfonso on 'em- then you'll be talkin'! (Pix borrowed from @LostDutchman.) A dealer I worked for here in town once bought a box lot I saw on eBay, at my recommendation. The coins were in a cigar box and the auction photos weren't great, but it looked like there was a British gold half-sovereign in there. When the box arrived, the "half-sovereign" turned out to be fake- just a jewelry charm. BUT the box was loaded with some nice scarce Puerto Rican coins! He sent them all off to be slabbed, and they fetched a couple of grand when he sold 'em. Not bad for a $40 investment. As I recall, he threw me a bone, since I was the one who had pointed the lot out to him. The only Puerto Rican coin I have personally owned was this holed 1895 PG-V 20-centavo piece, which I kept on my old Holey Coin Vest. I would imagine there are some nice reales and such in the dirt down there! Go get 'em! I wanna see what comes up!
I want one. A non-holed example. They're tough coins. I had never seen any prior to helping my local dealer (accidentally) score that small hoard of them.
