Hello all, longtime lurker here In my 2015 proof set, the Sacagawea dollar coin seems to have a significant doubling in the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST". You can clearly see the word GOD and the R in TRUST superimposed over the existing inscription. There are also some streaks to the left of Sacagawea's profile. Sorry for the quality of the pictures, they were taken through the plastic of the mint set. I'm curious what you all think! Thanks
'thru the plastic' - you're seeing the reflection of the coin itself, and it's reflected back on the plastic. A very common effect for coins in plastic sets or round plastic holders. There is no doubling on the coin itself....sorry
Hi Fred, That's what I thought as well, at first. But the letters are definitely on the coin. I can see them from all angles. Here are pics at two lighting angles:
All I can see is the GOD and R. You can also see some streaks to the left of the bust that might be hair? I am wondering if it's MD, but I cant figure out how that could be with the odd angle and huge spread.
Fred is right. It's nothing more than a reflection. I can't count how many times I've seen this on proof sets. Chris
Hi Chris, Thanks for your input! I know, I know it looks like a reflection. But a reflection moves in different lighting - these letters are on the coin in the same place no matter how I light it (note the glare on the letters): Lit from bottom left Lit from top left
I was hoping I wouldn't have to break it open... but I guess it's time to burn that bridge. I'll take some pics tonight.
It's barely there in your first picture of the full coin. It could be caused by the camera or the flash. Do you have a loupe? You should look at it with one first and move the coin around. You can also try rotating the coin 180* and see if it shows in the same spot or if you now see "WE TRUST" differently.
If you have a dealer around, or are in the vicinity of some of our more knowledgeable members, some other eyeballs could help before breaking it out.
Hey all, I got impatient and cracked it open. Unfortunately there is no doubling on the coin Here’s the deal: when the coin was first put into the set, it was pressed so strongly, it imprinted some sections of the coin into the plastic encapsulation. Then, I guess they rotated it enough so I would see the pattern on the plastic just a fraction of a mm above the coin! Oh well, that was exciting for a few days
