It is hard to tell without seeing it in hand. Color can hide a lot on a coin like that especially in photos. Luster also makes a big difference. Your coin has a mushy strike, but this issue is known for weaker strikes even in higher grades. If you ever sold it, a True View might help, and it isn't that much more for an economy regrade if you have several other coins going in.
Ok, let's try a three part exercise. 1. Which coin sold for more? 2. Guess the price of (a)...guide around $35-$45 3. Guess the price of (b)...guide around $55-$70 Winner will be the one who gets the most parts right; in the case of a tie, whoever is closest to the price of (a) wins the point...if two people are still tied, then we will used tiebreaker #2 Also feel free to comment on which one you like more. (a) (b) (tiebreaker #2) did (a), (b), both, or neither sell for more than the following:
1). A sold for more 2). $225 3). $200 The toning on A is far superior but the obverse is atrocious and I would never want to own that coin. The obverse of B is cleaner but still rather generic, and I’m not completely convinced that the toning is original. I wouldn’t want to own either of these two coins.
(a) reminded me of a coin I used to own ....as another potential tiebreaker, everyone can guess if (a), (b), both, or neither sold for more than the following: Post #12 here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/post-your-ngc-stars-and-a-little-history.308504/ (1884-CC Morgan)...I added it to the original post
I disagree and think B sold for more. A sold for $250 B sold for $275 The CC sold for the most at $310
The answers... 1. (b) sold for more 2. (a) went for 376.88 3. (b) went for 472.50 4. the tiebreaker coin went for $440 (in 2016); so right between the two sales from this last weekend ....when I bought the CC in 2016, I thought I overpaid (I liked the coin though so I was willing to go a bit high....I did eventually sell it for around break-even when I found something I liked better) And I continue to be surprised by some of the toned results at GC; I liked (a) but to me it was crazy money for a reverse toned MS 62..... (b) was even more confusing; it was a 64 with CAC, but I didn't see anything too special.
@Duke Kavanaugh takes the round by being closest on two of the three answers (tiebreaker was not needed). Let's try this one...1885-O MS 67 examples have ranged from $600-$900 lately on eBay. What did this one sell for recently (I used the photo from the auction and I didn't win it)?
I agree that it looks baggier than what I like to see in a 67 and that was part of the reason I didn't really bid (I placed a small bid just to track it). This is one of those that has likely stayed in the old holder because it was maxed out back then and is still maxed out today.
$1350 I’m saying this coin performed well because the reverse toning pattern mimics “cat’s eye” toning which is highly sought after by toning enthusiasts. I agree that it is overgraded if you just look at surface preservation. I’d rather see this coin in an MS66* holder.
