True, this isn't even specific to Pilate. Most medieval depictions show historical figures in their culture's fashion.

As a follow up, the forum claims that Pilate only gained his 'roman toga look' in the late 18th early 19th century due to conspiracy. However the post fails to mention that during this period, the neoclassical fashion had set in, with a deeper appreciation for classical civilisation and study of Greece and Rome being encouraged. Study of the Elgin Marbles all the way to Schliemann's archaeology at Troy reflects a 19th century push to understand these civilisations. The post fails to see how greater cultural events and attitudes towards civilisation/empire in the 1800s are responsible for a more accurate depiction of historical figures in later media.

 

Forgot to say: the 'evidence' used by the forum is ridiculous and still does not prove that Pilate didn't exist. It's just that a medieval artists (usually monks) didn't know what ancient cultures dressed like.

 

Hey guys, since were on this subject how about a trivia question! Remember the puppet show "Punch and Judy" where the Roman soldier was beating the guy with a sword. Its been banned in the US for 30 years or more as being to violent. That puppet show is over 1200 years old. Guess who Punch and Judy are named after? The subject of this thread gives you a hint.

It reads like other ridiculous conspiracy theories. We never landed on the moon, big foot. Area 51.

 

Unless the Trivia and other books like World History are wrong, Punch and Judy are named after Pontius Pilate and Judas Iscariot. Hence the Roman themed soldier with the sword. That show did not originate in the 16th century but took its roots from a basic showing of it. It is older than that. There were many variations of the show over the earlier centuries. Not saying your wrong. I was first told about the show when I first entered the Catholic school. We were warned by the nuns never to watch that show because it depicted Christ being brutalized by the Romans. Where they got that from I cant say but it sure wasn't from an Italian comedy. Back to our coin thread.

 

Take in consideration the importance of the Vatican Library that has the only copys of the written word since it began and is only accessible by a few. How much would it change history as we know it if scholars were allowed to research it? It is fact that in countless archeological excavations items discovered do not belong to the time period when they were found. Many civilizations over millions of years have existed and had their own versions of deities relative to their belief systems. Pontius Pilate did absolutely exist (the inventor of Pilates) and was indeed a king as history has recorded. The many civilizations aforementioned were destroyed by their own hands through technological advances just as we are now. It is a cycle that repeats and disappears thru-out times. Every civilization has had a monetary system of which none of them survived to the present day and ours will also soon collapse, there is no other outcome. Oh the idiocracy of this post. As far as coins go and I love the hobby and the people with their funny quirks that are in it.
