How much does a die need to be rotated to be of value as a rotated die error? I found these two pennies, but they aren't rotated much. cent rotated obv a.jpg cent rotated rev a.jpg cent rotated obv b.jpg cent rotated rev b.jpg

I asked the mint what the tolerance was for die rotations. Here is their answer:

"For circulating denominations the coin rotation tolerance is typically: +/-6⁰

For numismatic (proof coins, precious metals, commemoratives, etc.) denominations the coin rotation tolerance is typically: +/-3⁰"

The most popular rotations are the 45⁰, 90⁰ and 180⁰ rotations.

Collectors show little interest in rotations smaller than 45⁰, except for proofs which will start at about 20⁰.

I like your method of tying a string around the coin to show the amount of rotation!

I didn't know what the heck I was looking at until I read your post! It looked like the coin was cut in half!! :hilarious: Thanks!

I bet a small rubber band would work also.

I'm going to try that. I have a Buffalo Nickel with a rotated die. Thanks!

Post a pic so we can see if it works as well as the string.

Not a major rotated die but it's noticeable. This coin is in my 7070. I first noticed it a few years ago when I turned the page!

Nice rotation and use of the rubber band! Just eyeballing it, I estimate about 30 degrees?
