1938-D Registry Quality NGC Jefferson Nickel--Pick your Poison

Ok, this thread will be a slight variation of a guess the grade. I will present three registry quality 1938-D NGC graded Jefferson Nickels with MS67 on the label, and you must decide which of the three you would add to your Registry Collection.

Please vote in the attached poll and then explain in the comments why you chose your coin. After a few days, I will post the slab photos for each coin and explain my choice.

C, A a close second.

I might change my mind and go A depending on the in-hand appeal. Looks like a luster bomb with nice color.

Explanation... C seems to be the most complete coin out of the three. Nice fields, nice luster, splash of color. A has the most pizzazz of the group but I find the marks a little more distracting. B is a nice coin but doesn’t wow me like the other two.

 

I would definitely pick C. While all of them are beautiful, and nicely struck, with decent, if not full step detail, the toning of C is absolutely spectacular. I would happily own any of the three, as my MS 67 1938 D has original, darker album toning. C just has that refined, rainbow aura. I cannot understand how C did not get the star grade.

A would be my second choice, as the golden toning is also quite premium, in my view.

 

Tough choice... But I think C wins.

 

A because the fields better represent a new die.

 

C for me, is that a D/D im seeing?

 

C. Has a cleaner look, toning is subtle. The hit on the steps is a drag, but nothing I consider a distraction that would drive me toward A or B.

 

C for me. It looks like there's not too much difference in the marks between the three that would sway me toward or away from any one of them. But, I'm partial to the toning on C, over the other two.

 

C for me also.......A for second choice..

 

C for me. Moderate, nice slight tone. Solid coin.

 

If I win do I get to keep it?

B. I like the superior detail. The jaw has a smooth strike without the residual planchet marks that are so common. Monticello has nice detailing in all the windows and gives an impression of sharpness over the entire reverse.

On A I like the color but it is uneven on the reverse. C just doesn’t have the crispness of B.

 

B works for me. Less marks on the obverse cheek and hair than A and no spots on the reverse as on C.

 

This was difficult for me. With A, i like gold toning on any coin.
With B the steps were fuller but seemed to have a flat spot on Jefferson's cheek bone i didnt like.
C is what I chose because it is overall, much more free of marks and has hints of the typical pastel toning. It was the clearer choice for me if I were doing a registry.

 

I like B myself. It appears to be the cleanest..

 

I went with B as it seemed to be the cleanest overall (as a few others mentioned).

C appears to have the nicest color, but it also seems to be the one with the most marks in the jaw area, it has a hit around the ear area, and I believe I see some spots in the center of the Monticello building. If C didn't have two of those three features, I'd expect it would grade higher and be the clear cut choice.

A also has some marks on the jaw/cheek area and what I believe to be breaks in the golden toning on the reverse.

 

I went with A. I felt that the surfaces were the best on that one, would have been with C except the luster under the steps seemed to be muted. I thought that the die state was distracting, also the distracting mark in the steps really caught my eye. Over all I liked the color. It has the look that I would be interested in, in a 67'. But,
Jeff's jaw and collar also appear to have much more roll contact, Thank God someone decided to stack this one.

A is still my choice it is the most appealing, smooth and even luster over the entire coin, it has more planchet roughness but the high points of the surfaces look the best.

 

C. I'm not sure if it was your registry set I looked at. If it was, then C fits better with the rest of the set

 

“A” for me . I love that golden tone.

“C” has great details. Almost rainbow toning.

“B” looks nice but doesn’t stand out for me. Maybe because he doesn’t have any legs left to stand on

 

I like A even though I dont like toning.
Usually.
It seems the toning brings out the details and emphasizes the quality of the clean lines and clear fields.
Nickels, for various reasons, seem to very often have nicks and scratches in the field. This was especially bad in recent ones. Many times, going thru rolls, I would see a beautiful, shiny new one, with a big scratch or nick in the field in front of Jeffersons face.
So, A is my choice.
