I have been wanting one of these for a good long time but it kept getting pushed to the back burner in favor of other shiny objects. Finally, the other night after @lordmarcovan posted some paper notgeld he just picked up, I (drunkenly) jumped on ebay and put a bit in for one and then promptly forgot about it. Well....I won. In order to get the shipping down, I tried a bid under melt on a Canadian 50 cent piece also. I wont that and combined with shipping, I paid $15 for the two coins. They both came in the mail today and wow...this 10,000 Mark is a beast. He isn't as perfect as he could be, but for the price I can't complain! Check him out in all his massive gold glory! Here are a couple other smaller notgeld coins that I picked up for 25 cents in the world coin bin at a local coin show last week as well. Oh, and the 1918 Canadian 50 cent piece that I picked up for under melt. If you have anything that fits with this motley assortment of coins (notgeld - be it paper or coin, or other random Canadain coins...whatever you want!) post em here. Thanks for looking!
Cool! I think notgeld is under appreciated by most world coin collectors. Here's a piece I found in a $2 junk box at the Baltimore show a couple of years ago, from Bonn and featuring a well-known local boy:
I currently have metal notgeld from almost 300 different cities and probably over 1000 diff varieties (attributed from Funck's book). Here are a couple. Westfalen Nurnburg-Further Strassenbahn set in the original case
I was also attracted to this coins at first sight, especially the big one! Here is a 10000 mark I added to my collection a few years back. I guess it was before I could take good coin pics. Here is one I picked up more recently. Not as big, but I thought the obverse with the lady was cool.
Those inflationary "horse" notgeld have been on my radar for a little while. Haven't gotten one yet. Cool pickup. I like the Canadian half a lot, too. Less than melt? Drunken eBay purchase? You must be drinkin' the right stuff.
I find those Coblenz kriegsgeld in bulk lots periodically. They're prone to rust problems. Yours is actually not bad. Average to even slightly above average, in terms of that. Oh- and my Dad really liked that notgeld as his Fathers' Day gift. Mission accomplished.
The 10,000 Mark would've been $13 including the shipping. I figured that once I added the half in and the shipping was reduced...I essentially got it for $2-$3 Doesn't happen very often, but it is nice when it does!
My picture of my 10,000 mark coin was driving me crazy, so here is a new much better pic taken in sunlight.
I have another related piece. In the 1970-80's Germany did some restrikes of historic coins. This one is 5oz of silver and it is based on this design. I got it because of the zeppelin.
Errm, "Germany" did certainly not. That privately issued medal is indeed based on an actual coin design though. In 1930, the Deutsches Reich had made 3 and 5 RM coins referring to the 1929 (!) Zeppelin flight. But those showed the German eagle of course, not that horse. This medal may have been made by the mint in Hamburg, as it has Hamburg's CoA next to the "999" silver content ...
