This is my first time entering
I have never owned a gold coin before but my first silver coin was a 1891 Morgan dollar that my mom gave me when I was 5 or 6.what got me into coin collecting was a wheat cent album that had been my mother's when she was a kid.

I am a huge 19th/early 20th century Latin American collector, however most gold coins from those periods are above my budget. However a dear friend and vest pocket dealer at my local coin club sold me a Mexican 1945 restrike 2 1/2 gold peso a little below melt. While not completely within my area of collecting I treasure it none the less.

Kinda new here and think this is a great idea. This is a photo of my first gold purchase. Just bought it on 6/1. I was going to get the 1/4 oz but I was $5 short of cash but wasn't close to an ATM, so I settled for the 1/10th instead.

    As far as coins go:
When I was a kid I had a paper route.
While collecting for the week one lady gave me a strange coin, I thought it was some kind of foreign piece.

Walking away from her door I flipped it over and say United States of America on the reverse [then it was the back].

I looked back at the house and saw her standing there and smiling at me.

As soon as I could I rushed to the Library to get the Red Book, and saw that it was a Barber quarter.

I was amazed at the look of the coin. I never forgot it, and always wondered if she was just trying to get a kid interested in coin collecting.

    Thanks for another wonderful contest.

    there, I did it ;)

My coin related comments are simply an observation from your eclectic box. It seems you must really love that "CirCam" look that old worn coins tend to show when they are oxidized in the fields. Many of your ancients and mid-late millenia coins tend to show it, I like the look. Also, wasn't your original idea for the eclectic box only 20 coins, or am I mistaken?

I've never owned a gold coin, although I sure would love to. The closest I've got to it are three gold plated state quarters, oh and I'll mention it before anyone else does-- they're completely worthless lol. Although I did have the chance when I was younger to buy an English sovereign for $200 and a us gold $5 coin I think it was for $400-500 from an antique dealer, I was too unknowledgable to do it. Plus, they were probably cleaned in retrospect. I did recently read a fascinating article in the American Numismatic Association's The Numismatist on British gold sovereigns and all their types featuring Queen Victoria. I'd love to assemble a set of all the different types, but I can barely (if even) afford one! I don't know how people do it lol!

Wow does that 2nd fanam have a shine! Love that lustre if that's what it is. Maybe it's just the golden color of real gold and not brass that gets me, it's so beautiful!

Good Luck to everyone who entered!

Well the first gold coin I ever owned was an 1849 gold one dollar.

I purchased it for approximately $80.00 when gold was selling for about $1700.00 on the commodities market.

I bought it as a way of getting my feet wet in the world of gold bullion investment.

While I do not have the funds to actively collect these coins, I am always looking for a good deal.

The best deal I found was from a jeweler friend of mine, who purchased a few gold dollars, at spot price, from a customer.

He had me look them over, and I made him an offer of $130.00 for an 1878! The mintage on those was only 3000, so that coin is still the most rare in my collection.

While its a raw coin, it has been verified as being 22K, and weighs 1.67 grams. Its also in very nice shape. It was a jewelry piece, but used a circular, adjustable hoop mounting, so the mount did not damage the surfaces of the coin. Very cool find!

Good luck to all in the drawing. I hope to see you in the winners circle.

My one and only gold coin is a 1980 half sovereign that came from my lovely nan. Think she would have been 100 this year - she made it to 96 and worked for 80 of those years.

A recent purchase was an auction lot containing this curious evasion halfpenny, undated but 1790 I believe. Sorry @PaddyB

I just got into coin collecting about a year ago. As of now I have not owned a gold coin. However, I do have a Louisiana State quarter that is gold on one side. I thought I had something special until I was told that it was only "painted" gold.

Never owned a gold coin before because it's not in the budget! Not sure if we are doing pictures for this thread or not but what the heck! I've been MIA from this board and life in general for the past week because my 2 year old had cleft palate repair surgery and her recovery has been very not fun. But while she was under, my husband and I gorged on Chinese food and got this in our change!!

OK, I have updated the "Misc Swapstock" page and it is now on a new page called "Pick Bin & Giveaway Goodies". The link in the original post (well, Post #2, actually) has been updated. So this is where the winner of Prize #3 will get to pick his or her prize from.

This "LordM's Loot" page will continue to be updated and added to through the rest of the month. I just received news that I won five more gold fanams in an auction, too, so those might end up in the Pick Bin & Giveaway Goodies list by the end of the month, if I receive them in time!

So again, here is where prize #3 will come from.

Thanks. I do love the CircCam look, and was the person who coined the term, back around '06 or thereabouts. And yes, the Eclectic Box was a "Box of 20" themed collection from its humble beginning in 2013 on up until mid-2016, when I abandoned the 20-coin limit and let it grow.

As of the last update, it is up to 54 coins, now, and growing, and I have about a dozen pieces at PCGS, the grades for which should drop any day now, as they have been there almost five weeks.

I did a purge in March and sold a lot of my "trophy" coins to pay some bills, but bought back the same quantity as I had sold. So the collection is now broader but without quite as many bigger-ticket pieces. With one exception, all the coins in the collection are now under 500 bucks, and many are under 100 bucks. That wasn't the case in the Box of 20 period. Around 2015 everything in the Box of 20 was $200+ on the low end, and one coin was $2,300 on the high end.

On my salary and budget, I really belong in that "working class" price tier.

Regardless of one's budget level, there is good stuff to be found within every price range. You just have to try to get the best bang for the buck with what you've got.

Oh wow! I am kind of surprised those coins are mostly under 500$, they all look so good! I really do like the idea of an "Eclectic Set." Maybe I'll have to try one.

Oh, good. I'm doing something right, then.

Yes, you should try it. "Freestyle" is fun. Liberating. It can be hard to abandon the traditional, structured order of "sets", however.

In a freestyle collection, it is more difficult to set goals and measure your progress against something, without that framework and structure.

But one can develop strategies and structures, and have goals, even in a freestyle collection. Eclectic does not have to mean chaotic.

I seed rolls for my daughter, she is 7, to look through to fill her whitman albums, cents, nickels, dimes, etc. It is fun to see if she finds it. A few bucks in indian or wheat cents, buffalo nickels, or mercury dimes goes along way.
    If I win 2,4,3,1,5

I will also throw in some us silver coins for the next giveaway/contest. Nothing special, but some something in the hat.
