I recently came across a fun lil holed denarius of an emperor that I didn't have in silver, made my usual po boy low ball offer and they excepted it! Admittedly I do like holed coins adding to the stories my mind comes up with on the journey that coin had taken before arriving in my grubby grubbers. A couple points of interest on this one; The entry hole on the obv appears almost square. Making me think this was done in antiquity with an old hammered nail...though the reverse exit wound isn't as round. The reveres is really what sold me on this one. Very worn and holed, it was hard to identify due to the uniqueness of Salus seat and the groovy snake coming out of the hole...I mean altar! As everyone always says (double so in this type of worn condition) in hand it really does shine. It was just fun enough and surprisingly cool enough once received that I though this little scrub merited its own thread...Check it out! MACRINUS (217-218). Denarius. Rome 4.0 g 19 mm. I could bury your thread in holey coins. Don't believe me? Click here and keep scrolling down. That's only a partial list. However, I'll post two of the few ancient holeys. Zeno (emperor of the East, A.D. 476-491). AV Solidus. Thessalonica, A.D. 476 or later. My only Eliasberg-pedigreed coin. (This must have been a "junkbox" item for the likes of Eliasberg. Haha.) Then there's the ginormous Byzantine follis from a $20 pick bin.
Sorry , no holed coins but here is a well placed centration dimple Macrinus, Nikopolis ad Istrum And the latest addition to my Macrinus family Macrinus, Capitolias, Decapolis Picture courtesy of www.romanumismatics.com

This is the only Macrinus coin I have left: A Tet from Cyrrhestica, Beroea, 14.80 gm, 26 mm. This coin wasn't a "junk box special" .

When you tire of round holes, try some free form ones. Septimius Severus and Julia Domna, Stratonicaea with countermark removed. This Augustus was holed with an iron nail, part of which remains. This Gordian retains some of its bronze nail. Ditto for Trebonianus Gallus: My most recently acquired hole is just a boring round hold filled with ordinary dirt. It is in an Alexandrian diobol of Antoninus Pius ex. X6 collection.
Very neat square/round hole example, @Ryro. One hole... Two holes... A hole and a half... And, yeah, this guy...
This is my latest Macrinus, a provincial (of course!): Macrinus and Diadumenian, AD 217-218. Roman provincial Æ Pentassarion, 12.06 g, 26.5 mm, 6 h. Imagine if the Count counted holed coins instead of bats.... One hole, hahaha, two holes, hahaha, three holes.....
