All 3 of these coins were purchased from Manfred Olding Munzhandlung on MA Shops. I did not have examples of these coins before so these will fill out my Vespasian collection very nicely. They are examples of coins I have wanted. The extra incentive was the provenance. They are from the Reusing Schurer collection. Some more information on the provenance can be found in the first post of this excellent thread started by @Julius Germanicus https://www.cointalk.com/threads/majestic-nerva-sestertius-fortvna-avgvst.336333/ Vespasian 72-73 AR Denarius 3,24 g. Titus 80-81 For Divus Vespasianus. 3,10 g. Obv: Head laureate r; DIVVS AVGVSTVS VESPASIANVS Rev: Capricorns 2 back to back supporting shield inscribed SC, below globe Catalog:RIC 357 Cohen 497 Ex: Reusing Schürer collection Purchased from Manfred Olding Munzenhandlung June 4, 2019 Though it is quite worn on the reverse I have been looking for the large shield variant of this coin for a while. Notice that the shield with the SC inscribed is larger than on many other examples of this type. Also, I wanted a divvs type for Vespasian.
Do you have Olding´s printed Catalogue? There is a lot of info about Reusing, Schürer, and their collection in there!
It is probably well established by now that I love these. And though well-worn, I find that one very handsome, and quite appealing in its circulated state, with that nice grey toning. I also like that you can see where their bodies join, and their fishy tails are apparent. On mine, you cannot see this, nor the tails, and so they might as well just be goats. The conjoined capricorns here remind me of the pushmi-pullyu in Doctor Dolittle.
As you already know, I purchased several coins from Olding with this old pedigree. They arrived with the catalogue, yours should as well.
Nice ones Andrew and David. As you both know I also have several from this collection in the mail. I won't post until they arrive! The catalog is available but it takes some digging. I have one on hold for me from Sveto at ANE.
Many of Reusing´s coins have even older pedigrees which are listed in his hand written inventory updated by Schürer - mine was from the collection of german bank owner and numismatist Arthur Löbbecke (1850-1932).
