Wondering if this penny could have been struck through cloth (Obverse)? Also think I'm seeing some die deteriotion on obverse & maybe grease filled die on reverse "OF"?
I do not think it is a Struck-Through coin. There is no loss of design details. Looks more like a fingerprint to me. Cloth should have lines in two directions. The reverse may be a Struck Through Debris, But this area is known to be a common weak spot for LMC's.
Fingerprint or something else. Not struck through. Here is a half dollar of mine that is actually struck through cloth. Compare to yours and note the difference: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1976d-half-dollar-struck-through-cloth.254337/#post-2007819
I initially thought finger print. but you see it continuously top to bottom in various degrees. So probably linear plating blisters would be my guess.
Initially I thought fingerprint. (Before reading other posts.) But I don't know, and it's an odd pattern. While it may not be struck through cloth, it could be struck through something thin that had this pattern, like tape?
FYI, I see this weird zig-zag "seam looking" marks going from the lower bottom of the bow-tie to the lower left of the shoulder. Probably old tape residue when peeled off or something.
Not a struck through and not a fingerprint. The lines run over the entire face of the coin in straight lines. Looks like the Die was cleaned and wiped in one direction and the oil on the Die was transferred to the zinc planchet. After 33 years it has toned with those patterns. The reverse is a common week spot due to the design so the "of" appears as s struck through. No matter what the cause it's only worth face value.
Im thinking this 1996 Lincoln cent reverse may be the same thing you described? Im not necesarily thinking these coins i post are worth more than face value, just trying to learn so I know what im looking at when i find it!
Imho, yes exactly. I believe a struck through cloth coin;disrupts the image. So if it was placed over the object while being struck. The image will not come out clean and clear. I have seen this many times as well. Imho, it’s probably from adhesive tape. Perhaps used to close the end of a coin tube roll that was not closed properly.
Here is one of my coins that I believe is a fingerprint. If it's not, then please tell me what it is. It appears a little differently than what the photo shows. It's not anything that can be washed off, as it appears to be etched into the coin and looks like a fingerprint.
That's a fingerprint. I think once the oils from the skin sit on it for awhile, it etches into the coin and you are SOL. Not sure if acetone would help or not.
