Is there any possibility that the coin was genuine and in a very degraded condition. It was completely tooled and even restored or altered afterwards to look that way? Sorry to intervene so promptly but I can't imagine a certified US coin to be a fake.

I emailed John about this a few weeks ago, but haven't heard anything back. I expected to see him Sunday at Nashua, but he wasn't there.

Just more questions on my part - is this the only known example of 1899 FS-901?

If the only known example is not real, there is no DDR for this coin.
The IN GOD WE TRUST is not even close.
This would be hilarious if it's not even silver.

I wouldn't call it hilarious if it was that far off, because if it is than you really have to start going through the FS numbers and Wexler numbers and double checking them

    Nice deflection of PCGS’ mistake.

I didn't know PCGS is the one who comes up with FS and Wexler numbers.....

But hey who cares about facts right?

That's all I'm going to feed your trolling on the matter

They had the coin in hand. They had at least three experts to grade the coin (who don’t even do the variety attributions) at their disposal who looked at the coin in hand. They had ample time to verify the coin for themselves. But whatever. It has to be someone else’s mistake.

So PCGS does assign FS and Wexler numbers now and writes those guides?

They don’t, but it’s irrelevant. Their grading/authentication experts, who are decoupled from the variety attribution process, called it authentic.

Just lulz. At least admit you're trolling at this point and cannot possibly believe that FS and Wexler reference guides don't carry a ton of sway with TPG variety attributions?

The people who look at the coin to assign the grade are not the same ones who attribute the variety. What part of that do you not understand?

I’m not the troll here. You are the one who is failing simple reading comprehension.

Here's your free lesson for the day. Overton, Fortin, Vams, FS, Wexler, Cohen, JRS, WB, Bass etc etc etc varieties are attributed off of the references they put out. Many of those send letters denoting a new variety when they believe a new one should be noted to get the first discovery etc.

So again are you trolling or really that clueless?

Does it matter which variety it is or is not if the coin itself is FAKE?

Practically speaking no, but it had a FS and Wexler number so that can show how it was ever accepted in the first place

Everyone makes mistakes, so maybe a little more checking on these variety guides would be a good idea if so.
