What?! I have never experienced this before. I was told the US junk silver was their choice. I could NOT look through the halves, quarters, or dimes to pick out the ones I wanted. Have you ever experienced this before?
Yes, I have had this experience. Some coin shops have to keep someone watching while you do this (a trust issue), so, because their staff could be assisting other customers, they discourage this. Unfortunate, because I still need some years/mints of silver Roosevelts for my album.
Occasionally, if you come in on a weekday, they'll have fewer buyers/sellers, so it's highly likely they will let you pick out whatever specific coins you need.
Might have to look like a serious buyer Just put $100 bill on the table and ask nicely if you can find some random dates for your nephews coin collection.
Was it your first time in the shop? Some shops like to get to know you first. I hope you weren't wearing your long black Highlander coat!
Yes, first time in this shop. I also am putting together sets at spot, so I prefer to poke around for what I need.
Lol. $100 makes you a "serious buyer" in the world of silver. I can't make this EDITED up. READ the rules on language, abbrev., emojis. or special characters, do not make it.
Most often, to pick is more per ounce than just run of the lot. I guess the dealer could be concerned with theft and not let someone pick through it if they don't have someone there to watch you. When I did this the dealer usually was not busy so he did watch me unless he knew me pretty well. Today I have a few local dealers who would probably let me take the whole tray home and bring back what I wanted to buy and what I didn't the next day. Build a relationship with a dealer, and they will ease up.
Yup, it's all about building a relationship with the dealer. My local shop will bring stuff out on the counter and go about his business. He will come back when I've sorted things into piles and take my money. I'm still a small time buyer compared to some guys, But I've spent $1,000's of dollars there so that helps.....he's also got cameras all over
Exactly this. I know my dealer so well he lets me plunder through his safe..... Think of it like this. We all probably have freinds that we enjoy our coins with without a care. And we all likely have freinds that when they are around we lock our coins up tight. Dealers have to be cautious when a trusting relationship has yet to be developed.
Developing a positive relationship with your local coin dealer goes a long way in establishing trust.
