Silver Bullion vs Gold Bullion as an investment

But the units still cancel! There's just a numeric difference -- one (troy) pound of gold weighs less than one (avoirdupois) pound of bananas, but they're both units of mass (rather, the force exerted on a mass in an agreed gravitational field ).

And as long as you're canceling units, remember that "miles per gallon" is length over length cubed, so it's less repetitive to express fuel efficiency in terms of inverse acres. :)

Okay, After reading and going over and over these gold vs silver threads not going to use the word " Investment" not having gold to speak of... going to start accumulating 1/4 ounces or 1/10 oz pieces for awhile... see how that works out.. using what I have learned here..... (school in session)

    Buy what you like.
If you can buy something shiny and sell it to the next guy for 2x....your ahead on the grading curve.

Even though, not the smartest decision from an investment stand point as
You will always pay a premium for fractional goal, the 1/10 OZ AGE is a
Great place to start, and very affordable, also 1/10 APE,S an especially a
    Good value now :)

Problem is, you're going to lose money selling to a 3rd party. If you sell on Ebay, they take a 10% cut, then 2% Paypal.

If you sell to a dealer, they low-ball.

If you buy an ETF, like GLD or GDX, you pay a $5 transaction fee and can sell at anytime and don't need a safe to store it.

But-but-but when the EMPs go off and civilization collapses and everybody's running around in bearskins looking to trade their last cans of food for GOLD, how will "numbers in a computer" help you?

First off all, i would never sell bullion on the bay ! and PM purchases should
Be on the long term, sure your going to pay fees on both ends of the transaction
But your betting on the performance to make all your money back with interest.

    12 troy ounces in a pound (31.1g X 12) vs 16 in an Avoirdupois (28.3 g X 16).
Do the math and see if they're equal.

Not quite. Metric units are mass, not weight.

That is why Jeff added "rather, the force exerted on a mass in an agreed gravitational field ).."
as so far there are no bullion exchange on the space station or beyond. Remember what Kubrick said " All bananas weigh the same in space Bob" or something like that :) Jim

I still didn't quite nail it. I was always taught that while we think of pounds as mass, they're really a measure of force; mass is "slugs". But apparently only engineers make that distinction; the laws defining the pound appear to treat it as a measure of mass, not force.

The kilogram measures mass, period. Force is newtons (kg m/sec^2). A kilogram weighs 9.8 or so newtons.

when it all goes haywire there isn't going to be a "spot" price anyways.
It will be based on localized economies and what people perceive, at that exact time, what the value of gold has if it has any to them.

to me PMs are a "storage of wealth"
I recently reduced my "storage of wealth" as I got tired of it stacked there and decided to put the money to use, as a low risk investment instead (for now as I can convert it for much less cost and hassle than physical PMs). Plus I'm getting a consistent monthly return on it, unlike PMs.

There's so many different ways people can slice and dice the terminology etc to their specific definition that it's "ain't worth arguing..."

    speaking of which ... https://www.businessinsider.com/non-gold-safe-haven-assets-2014-10

don't forget .. if people are bananas, do they weigh anything ? :)

Since they hang upside down, the chart shows definitely the price of triploid bananas is UP, UP, Up! Jim :)

Only on Earth. The mass of an object is the same regardless of where it is, but the weight depends on what the gravitational force is. The Earth, Mars and Jupiter are all different weights, but the same mass.

I'm sorry, I thought that was where we all were. Where are you posting from again? ;)

I'm... thinking you'll want to rephrase that. :)

Something weighed on Earth, Mars or Jupiter will have different weights, but would have the same mass. How's that?
