It finally came in! Now I am going to ask a dumb question. It is in a sealed plastic sleeve (not slabbed) and has ANACS MS 60 written on it. Should I leave it in the plastic sleeve it came in or can I move it into another holder?
Before the days of slabs ANACS issued a certificate with the coin's description and grade along with photos of the obverse and reverse. Did this coin come with that ANACS certificate?
Neat coin. I think I see the words "DETAILS" on the flip, and I suspect that this coin has been cleaned and that's why they indicated "MS 60 DETAILS" on the flip. That's not to say the coin is necessarily bad, far from it, but rather to acknowledge the fact that it has likely been cleaned in the past (and as the hairlines would seem to indicate). That said, I see nothing wrong with moving it to another flip.
Nice coin..but I believe that is more of an AU58...someone just wrote on the mylar flip. That coin has not been graded!! All the scratches in the fields are a little much for a 60 (IMO) The Obverse almost looks like it has been lightly whizzed..anyone else care to comment? I could be wrong, but thta is what it looks like to me. See all the fine lines running from the left to the right?? If you bought that at melt..good buy!! A nice piece of Americana, no doubt! RickieB
I bought it on ebay. They made no promises. I bought it strictly for the gold value. No certificate or anything. SO...the anacs means nothing? I suppose I will encase it in something more appropriate.
Man, very nice coin, especially for your first purchased gold coin. Looks like there is some slight wear IMHO, but I could be wrong. I'd say AU-55/AU-58, but I could be wrong. :thumb: Phoenix
My grandfather grew up in St. Louis way back in the early 1900's. He told me how neat it was when the men would stand on the street corners and jingle their gold coins. I can ONLY imagine!
Thanks to all! As stated...I bought only a gold coin. No promises. I am REALLY happy with it. So I am planning on moving it to another holder.
very nice gold coin, I'd call it au-58 too many hairlines on the obverse, however I don't think it has been cleaned more of a slider kinda coin but I could be wrong.
I would put it in an airtite. Common date gold liberty coins are excellent bullion coin substitutes. You did well for a first purchase!
Beautiful Coin, if it were mine I wouldn't touch it without cotton gloves on and then only to transfer to a airtite ... but if you are going to get it graded at anacs I'd leave it as is for them to mount for you... As I said Beautiful Coin, I happen to have a 1 oz 1986 fifty Dollar gold piece as My first gold coin Not graded either but a $2000 Coin...
Just as you have found out, folks can write whatever they want on an old plastic flip. It might be that the coin actually had been in an ANACS MS60 DETAILS holder, which would mean that ANACS thought it had no wear, but had a problem that precluded putting it into a problem-free holder. Of course, it could also be that you purchased a counterfeit and you are not knowledgeable enough to spot the fake.
