Its all about trading for what you need and the other guy wants, regardless
Of what it is, what ever it takes to survive, Bottom line !!

Trade only occurs in stabilized situations. These doomsday scenarios that often get floated are anything but stable. When you don't know where your next meal will come from or how long until you see water again you don't trade either for money or any form of PM. You also don't trade medicine for PMs.

PMs are nothing but dead weight in such situations. Bullet would have value, alcohol or tobacco as a luxury would have value, a bag of gold would have none.

The issue I have with the PM as survivalist currency is...it's usually a notion that is floated by someone who foresees fiat currency one day plummeting in value and believes that PMs are the only hope for stable currency.

A prepper buddy of mine made me read this thinking it would convince me, it didn't: https://www.amazon.com/Patriots-Nov...+patriot+book&qid=1551318033&s=gateway&sr=8-1

In that book, the US government collapses and chaos descends...and the only currency people will accept is pre-65 silver coinage. It's ridiculous.

The problem with such notions is just was I have been trying to say (and @baseball21 seems to agree with)...that PMs would be nothing but dead weight in such a world.

Which is just people who have a fundamental misunderstanding of what money actually is.

Exactly. We haven't seen an unstable world which many of these events would create. As bad as WW2 was that is no where close to the chaos of nuclear war or electricity going out for good and things of that nature.

Too many people have watched doomsday preppers which was just there to get ratings. If you live in or right by a major city you basically have a 0 percent survival rate in nuclear war.

People just don't get how bad it would actually be if no matter what your power isn't coming back on and the gas in your car is the last you'll be able to get. PM sellers have done a great job promoting this kumbaya world of trading but the reality would be the polar opposite

You've said this but what it is based on? What makes you say this? I'm not disagreeing with you but just asking.

At any given state that society is in, there will always be some form of currency. I'm a supply and demand kind of guy so rarity plays an important roll. Won't gold and silver still be rare, and may not they become the default form of "currency" in doomsday scenarios?

Rare? Sorta I guess. Valuable? No. As said before, you can’t eat gold, can’t drink gold, can’t hunt or defend yourself with gold etc.. I believe silver can be used to help dress wounds, but it’s not like you can drop an ASE on a bullet wound and call it a day. Point being, in a doomsday situation, PMs would not have a use. Now maybe many years down the line when civilization (hopefully) starts to rebuild, gold and silver may become currency again. But I would much rather spend the money I have now on years worth of food, versus a few ounces of gold.

This thread has turned into a discussion about "doomsday" type scenarios. Nuclear war, government is gone, sorta event. In a world like that...what purpose would PMs serve. They don't have any basic real world use other than we have deemed them valuable. In a world like that, practical necessities would be valuable. Food, water, fuel, medical supplies, ammo...things that we need to survive. You can't eat PMs...or use them as a fuel source. They don't cure illnesses. In a lawless society...they wouldn't be of much use.

I guess this is what is at the root of my question. How desparate does it have to get before there is no hope for the future and the idea of value in PM's disappears?

I think it would have to get pretty bad. Every man for himself bad.

There is no real way of knowing, but my thinking would be as long as there is some form of humanity remaining, there’s a chance. There’s many factors that go into play here, and it’s basically impossible to say with any certainty exactly what is going to happen, but in my opinion, even if you are able to survive *insert global disaster here* I doubt you would live long enough to see your PMs having value. PMs, aren’t even a great form of currency. Easy to fake, difficult to carry in large quantities, difficult to divide. I wouldn’t say it’s beyond reason to think that they could become a form of currency, but it’s somewhat of a long shot if they did.

It's been awhile since I have read some good dystopian fiction or have seen Mad Max or A Boy and His Dog type of movies, but if I recall, money still had some stature. My memory ain't that good though - lol.

Bit of a long shot here, but in the Fallout series of video games, they use bottle caps as currency after a nuclear war. I did a quick search online, and you can get millions of them for about .0075 cents today. In the game 20 caps is worth 8 ounces of clean water. Something with very little per disaster value and almost no objective value becomes the basis for a currency system. Maybe we should all start collecting bottle caps.

Heh. My dad's family have been hill folk for centuries (literally, they settled the area in the late 1700s). The old homestead was built before indoor plumbing and electricity. It's got clean spring water, lots of deer-heavy woods surrounding it, and a couple of fields that were cultivated for decades but fallow now. Yes, they're armed; yes, they know about self-sufficiency. It's the perfect place...

...about one mile from Camp David, as the shockwave flies. If it all goes south, according to the recently published target maps, they might have time to startle at the flash. But probably not.

In another thread, a CT member made the correlation of using gold sewn in a jacket to get out of certain secured areas for bribes. It makes sense even today in certain parts of the world.

So it all depends upon the situations, the location, the environment, the type of emergency, etc etc etc. but cash works pretty good for various stuff too.

Don't forget twinkies. In certain situations "golden" twinkies may be worth more than gold. ;)
