I picked up three 1916D Mercury Dimes recently. They were all purchased raw and as always it’s a risk with with all the fakes these days. I got a very good price on them as the sellers were very motivated to sell and the risk of buying them raw from unknown personal sellers was there. I don’t usually do that but took the calculated risk after checking them out as best as possible. I felt confident in my assessment but I’m certainly far from perfect. Anyway, I’ve sent two off to PCGS to be graded and so far so good! They actually came back better than I expected grade wise. Both straight graded which is great because I believe the last will not straight grade. Before this I didn’t own a single 1916 D and now I own 3!
I love hearing stories like this. You rolled the dice - with understanding that there are a lot of fake 16d’s, and l know a lot of collectors and dealers who got stuck with one - and you scored! Nine work, and mercury dimes rule.
Sorry, I forgot to include the grades in all my excitement to share my scores G4 and G6. I really wasn’t expecting a G6, I guess I was being cautious with my estimated grades.
Thanks, it’s always great to hear a positive story. I’ve been so excited about it I had to share. I’ve never been able to own the elusive 16D. I’ve always like the Mercury Dime series. I couldn’t afford a graded example on my current coin budget so I knew I’d have to wait until I could find something like this.
At some point ya gotta trust your eye - that is why you look at all those coins for years, so you know! Nice
