    On this day in 1809, the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln,was born in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky.

    Also on this date in 1959, the Memorial cent went into circulation.

    In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell & Elisha Gray, both apply separately for telephone patents Supreme Court eventually rules Bell rightful inventor. I have a feeling that one of these will be commemorated with a coin soon.

    In 1912, Arizona was admitted to the Union as the 48th state.

    Frederick Douglass' family could not imagine having a 50 cent piece of their own. I'm not even sure if the enslaved could legally possess hard cash.
