Could you please help identifying what is behind Tyche? Have been trying without any success to find out what it is. Is it just her chair that was struck too far to the left? Æ Semis (½ As), 4.06 g, 20 x 21 mm; Hispania Baetica, Irippo, ca. 30 BC Ref.: RPC I 55; SNG Copenhagen 154; Vives 110-2; Obv.: IRIPPO inscription before bare head of Augustus (?) r. Rev.: Tyche seated left, holding pine cone and cornucopia, all within wreath Since my pictures are really not good, I am also including a better one found at acsearch, where they seem not to be sure if it is Augustus My coin: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1077215:
Nice new and interesting addition! I think it's just the forward-most back leg of an ornate chair. My Irippo is the first listed in this thread : https://www.cointalk.com/threads/unexpected-groupings-appearing-in-my-collection.320061/
Concordia is often depicted enthroned, resting her arm on a stylized statuette of Spes. Perhaps that's what the engraver intended on your provincial. Sabina, AD 117-137. Roman AR denarius, 3.43 g, 18.3 mm, 7 h. Rome, AD 129. Obv: SABINA AVGVSTA HADRIANI AVG P P, diademed and draped bust, right; hair in plait behind neck. Rev: CONCORDIA AVG, Concordia enthroned left, holding patera and resting on statuette of Spes; cornucopiae below seat. Refs: RIC 398; BMCRE 895-900; Cohen 12; RCV 3919; CRE40.
@http://@Justin Lee, @Roman Collector Yes, I read your post, and we have the same attribution, RPC I 55. I am always very happy when I get the right reference but I couldn't find anywhere a mention to that strange pointed thing to the right and behind Tyche. Thank you both, will add your two possible interpretations to my notes
No; I can see clearly the cornucopia, it is the thing with a handle (?) behind her - if it is a chair it must be really uncomfortable
I think it's comparable to the chair (ornate throne?) Vesta is sitting upon on the reverse of the infamous Caligula As...
You are right, it is very similar. Chair it is On the Irippo coin they struck the chair so far away that it almost gives the impression she is not sitting on it
