Which do you like better and why? Im new to this and thinking of buying one, but Im not sure which. I know they have different quantities and purity of gold? But they still are priced the same. Does it matter? Any opinions? Sorry if this is a rookie question for this site.

Welcome to CT. Rookie questions are welcomed as long as your willing to hear the answers.

Before answering your question, what are you trying to accomplish? Would you just like to acquire some gold bullion or are you thinking of "investing" in gold? What bullion coin do you like better?

This hobby is really not a place invest your money. It's not a bad place to store some wealth, but if you're looking to invest, the stock market (ETF's, mutual funds, common stocks) is the place to be.

I like both designs. I own a reverse proof Gold Buffalo. I do not own any gold american eagles; however, one day, I will add one in proof to my collection.

I think unless you turn into a coin guru like so many here, you will always be an investor, and only slightly a collector. I started in 2015 because I seen the High relief and liked it, Then I started listening to Gordon Long, Peter Schiff, Dave Stockman, and now lynette Zang. it all started with Mike Maloney, and learning just how screwed we are and what the FED is doing. Corrupt is being nice, crooks is what they are...

Anyway, I started with that, then bought both AGE's and Buffalo's thinking both are good investments. I have since added a Burnished 08 Buffalo and a lot of Silver because of the Silver/Gold ratio...

So there it is from another newbie... I wouldn't mind buying some MORE Pre 33, but I dont buy the thing they say about Confiscation. If they take it, they are not going to allow you to keep older stuff out of kindness. Rare dates attract a premium and if you have the money, that is what the rich folk want... Spending 15K on one coin is easier to hide, or store than 10 buffalo's, or 789.47 Silver Eagles

I got one with my late father back when it first came out. The design and purity was of collecting interest to both of us. The second gold coin I bought was a 1/2 oz AGE at much lower premium over spot. My next will be a fractional gold maple. I like variety in my collecting/investments. I guess thats my advice to you.

This is very true. Hopefully my Investing will allow me to slowly turn into a collector.

I would go AGE,S , being 22 Kt its allot more durable coin then the
    Buffalo,s 24 Kt composition.

The Krugerrand is the most popular gold coin in the world and is
Actually a couple dollars cheaper at most online PM stores, for
Random dates, i have a couple of these, this one is the 2017
    with 50 year Privy.

Thanks everyone! I wanted to buy an AGE or Buffalo as I live in the USA and figured it would be smartest to buy one of those. I guess I am buying as an investment. I have other investments(stocks, ETFs,) but thought this would be a fun and interesting way to invest in gold for the future vs buying GLD etf. Something to look at, teach the kiddos with, pass along to them, etc. I dont think the USA is ending, but I do think its likely the inflation really gets going. So for investing purposes- I guess Im going to lean Buffalo, as I like the higher content and I think the design is better. And I like the idea of fractional AGEs for some variety too.

Sounds pretty easy to go from investing to collecting. Oh boy. Mrs. Doobie isnt going to like that. ;)

The fractional,s are way to go, but remember you will pay a higher premium
For buying less then an 1 OZ.

I really liked this blog. I learned a great deal. I started out about 10 years ago when I inherited half of my father's coin collection. It wasn't really a collection, it was just a lot of coins well taken care of. I got a lot of Morgans and Peaces as well as a lot of coins dated prior to 1964. Being an accountant, I started to organize the coins and put them in better coin holders. Over the years, I have bought several gold coins, some from a dealer (I checked it out thoroughly before I bought them) as well as the Mint. I have a few coins and sets of coins that I buy from the Mint each year. (ASE Proof & Unc., Annual Proof Silver Sets, Annual Proof Silver America the Beautiful Sets, and others that catch my eye.) Over the years, I bought one ASE S from the Congratulation Set from dear old Rick PF69, and my first buy was 20 Morgans "BU's" from "Mike". Thanks for all!

I applaud your choice. Only because it's the design you like better. You can't go wrong with either, but if you like it, then you will enjoy it more.

Having a .999 fine Gold Coin in you hand is really cool. Let us know when you get it. I won't be surprised if this starts your interest in the hobby. Have you thought about buying a Proof version of the coin? If you don't buy a Proof Gold Buffalo, than think about buying a Proof Silver Eagle at the same time you order the gold buff. I think you'll like it.

I like the message @JPeace$ is sending. Your first gold purchase is like that first Lays potato chip. You can’t stop at one!..... Gold Fever is a real thing. I been fortunate and came into some good fortune back in the 1990’s. I bought all the old gold coins I could find because I never could afford them before. Fortunately for me, that was twenty-odd years ago and gold is a great deal more valuable now..... Gold is a purchase to be made for the long term. You will enjoy it much more looking at it that way. And if buffalo’s Tickle your fancy, have at em and enjoy your purchase.

    It really makes no difference.
999+ gold is more prone to scratches.
Gold Alloy coins (Gold Eagle, Krugerrand) are prone to copper spotting

For me, scratches are far more tolerable than copper spotting, so I prefer pure gold coins. But an authentic ounce of gold is an ounce of gold either way.
