Thoughts on Apollo 11 gold coins?

hello everyone, I had just noticed that the price was finally posted on the Apollo 11 gold coins in the U.S. mint. I was curious on if anybody was going to purchase? The price is slightly over $400, do you feel it’s worth it? I personally like the design however I am not sure if it’s worth it seeing how other gold quarter ounces can be purchased for less. What are your thoughts? I’d love to know. Thank you.

Commemorative coins are historically duds. I also like the design, but I’m going to pass. You will likely be able to find a graded 69 for below issue price in a year or two. That is unless gold goes to the moon

 

Yeah, just get some bullion, would be difficult to recover the premium.

 

The cost per ounce is well over spot. Are you investing in bullion or collecting the coin? If investing it's a losing cause. If it's for collecting well that's different.

 

For the most part I have the mindset to invest. I like to stack silver and have very few pieces of gold to stack. The collector in me likes it but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. It has a 50k mintage which seems nice.

 

I am a lover of gold and silver and do most all my buying near spot. The Apollo releases are significant to me. I been emotionally tied to them since they were announced. I am going in deep on all versions of the silver and clad. But no, I cannot make myself spend that much for the gold.

 

Gold will be a good short term flip but not for long term stacking/investment.

 

buying something out of emotion, isnt the best idea especially if your
doing it for investment purposes.

 

I can't make myself pay the premium for clad copper. The gold coins have the lowest premium of all offers. Would you rather pay $1600/oz. Gold, or $70/oz. Silver?

 

I have to buy them
they'll make great ashtrays in my office waiting room along with the 5oz silver.


all seriousness. I really love these designs. Some ppl may not. But the "Apollo" thing may make them worth more in the long run (plus quick flippers). Or, it may not.

Either way, plenty US MInt stuff goes closer to spot in the long run. Some stuff doesn't, some stuff takes a significantly long time to get closer to spot (I'm still waiting for the 2009 one ounce Liberty high relief to get closer to spot ... so slowly like $25 a year ...

 

I assure you that it was a difficult decision. Provided all my wish list makes it here in two hours, I'll be in nearly $600.00 worth. I figured I better cool my jets and let the gold slip me by.

 

But here again buy what you like regardless...LOL

I got mine. I seldom buy sets from the mint, but with this unusual design, only 50,000 minted and limited to 1 per household, I think they will be worth it down the road, unless gold takes a dump.

 

It's a cool design. I was worried if I wait I may never buy it for the price now. Of course, maybe I could have bought it for less .. now that nothing is really sold out ...

oh well, the US Mint is the closest I get to gambling. LOL

 

Just because its limited, doesnt make it more valuable, food for thought.

 

The introductory price is only good until Feb. 25, at 3 pm and then it goes up $5 (more if gold goes up). The other consideration that I guess isn't/wasn't widely publicized is that the surcharges of $35 for each gold coin goes half to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's "Destination Moon" exhibit, ¼ to Astronauts Memorial Foundation and ¼ to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.

 

Purchased the proof gold and the 5 oz silver.

 

I was at a show and saw one of the new Breast Cancer gold $5 that a collector bought for just over melt, so if you're patient, you might be able to do the same with the Apollo XI gold.

 

I will pass on the gold piece. That's too much to pay for a little more than 8 grams of gold. Commemeratives are such a crap shoot that it's always hard to tell whether it will catch on and amass value beyond the premiums. Maybe. Maybe not. A peak in interest might occur right around the actual anniversary, but I don't remember much hype for the 10th, 25th, 30th or 40th anniversaries. Perhaps 50 will be different, but so far I'm not seeing any real hype generating, unfortunately. I bought a Silver dollar in any case. That's not a risky investment.
