Because that's where the overwhelming majority of counterfeit products across all industries are originating from
The race card has nothing to do with how people view DC and Chinese fakes. It just so happens the origin of these foreign fakes using base metal come from a country populated by the Chinese. If these fakes were coming from England instead of China there would be just as much of an uproar. No need to bring in trigger words like race into the conversation.
The Chinese are worthy of scorn, and I am not taking up for them; however, it is hypocritical to attack one operation overseas while praising or ignoring domestic ones.
Fair enough, but there is still hypocrisy even if racism and the ethnic identity of the producers is not an issue. That's the point. If someone in the U.S. can produce off date pieces then I don't see how pieces made by other producers using fictitious dates are any more dangerous to the hobby. Changing the date alone, particularly to one that is very close to the period when the pieces were struck, is concerning to be because it could be construed as a trial strike, pattern, etc., for novices who even pay attention to the date. There are new discoveries all of the time, and this hobby is full of pieces struck by the Mint that shouldn't technically exist.
Sorry I'll take an overstrike on an authentic Peace, Morgan, Large Cent, etc any day over a counterfeit struck or cast in base metal.
Without examining in hand, it is impossible to conclude in many cases what the source of the planchet is.
This has always baffled me, why some folks don't see that @dcarr has worked on occasion very closely with the US Mint. The continual repetitive accusations that he is flying under the radar is just not true, Dan is very well known. Some of his color toned pieces are spectacular. I was able to pick these up at the "Worlds Fair of Money" here in Denver 2017 These are concept dollars meant to be used as the Golden Dollar. http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page17a.html Betsy Coleman with out "Peace" Apollo Astronaut Proof like thin Link to the mintages for the concept dollars. http://www.moonlightmint.com/dc-coin_dollars_list.htm I also figured I would show the first coin my son bought. It looks like Dan probably carried this one around for a while. This one doesn't seem to be in the mintage figures. It is a thin Brass but looks to be a satin finish, could be the circulation.
@Pickin and Grinin The pieces you posted are not controversial. I'm glad you posted them to keep the discussion balanced. The over strikes are only a single facet of his business and the only one to elicit criticism that I have seen.
There is an easy solution to all of this. Those that do not like Mr. Carrs stuff ... sue him in court, not public opinion. Just be careful. If you lose you may have to pay his lawyer bills.
I would be extremely surprised if any of the Chinese imports were overstruck using authentic Peace or Morgan dollars or any other host coin using an authentic coin depicted by the strike. This includes Indian and Lincoln small cents, Classic large cents, Mercury dime, Roosevelt dime and others.
I don't have an issue with Chinese fantasy dates. Some of them are actually quite humorous. My problem is the fakes with a date issued by the US mint that are meant to deceive novice collectors and they are getting better at it.
The post wasn't made to keep anything in balance, the post was made to let everyone know that Dan is very well known around all the social circles that matter and definitely by those who are capable of making a case against him. (win or lose) I can only recall one word and I will leave it basic. "Ignore" Because the facts are easily seen in this thread along with the other, yet you continue to argue against them. These are sold as fantasy pieces, end of conversation, that is until you can prove to the Court of Law that he is guilty. Come back when you have some kind of evidence proving your point. Because as of right this very minute he is an abiding citizen in everybody's eyes except the few that have personal differences and that does include you.
What I have been told about this process is that the coins used aren't very easy to locate in most instances. Not to mention the right coins for planchets can get quite pricey.
And that's the foot in the door for anyone who wants to talk me out of being a Carr fan, I suppose. It bugs me a bit to think of consuming a real coin to produce an overstrike. I know he uses problem coins (cleaned, otherwise damaged) when he can -- but I don't mind problem coins so much, and I'd probably have been happy to have some of those host coins in my collection. So I'm more sensitive to that aspect than most of today's collectors. (Most would say "a problem coin isn't collectable anyway, have at it.") Except 1921 Morgans. Everybody can smash as many of those as they want.
An aside: all this recent discussion sent me off to his site, where I saw that he'd recently done Coiled Hair Stella restrikes. I was sad to have missed that, as I'd love to have a good Stella reproduction to admire. But then I saw that they were restruck on half-eagle ($5) host coins, which means (a) wrong size and weight, (b) wrong composition, and (c) change in face value... ...but then I saw that he amended the obverse to state the actual composition, and the reverse to state "100 CENTS + FOUR DOL." So now I'm back to wishing I hadn't missed them. My wallet's relieved, though, so there's that.
