eBay buying, determining what is good?

So this is my first post in the forum ! I foolishly looked in old cabinets when I was young maybe a decade ago and ..... used all my father's wheats as regular change ANYWAYS. There's this listing on eBay and this guy's switching up his story a ton and not sure if he is legit or not. He apparently is selling his entire collection of coins but in two separate listings. All the coins are spaced out taken out of their rolls, he also apparently has an entire bag full of steel cents. My question is, is it worth the price on eBay the estimate of face value and if I should even keep bidding on it as my friend suggested it is just an illusion to reel people in.

I am now very fond of collection I do not have a collection however started it up with a 1964 quarter I found!

In the next 39 hours, that could triple in price. I see some silver pieces on top of a lot of what I suspect are clad Kennedy halves. There may be thousands of pennies, but if they're not the right dates/mints and in the right condition, then what have you got beyond thousands of pennies.
I see 6 1 0z. bars and 1 5 oz. bar. That's roughly $175.00. Try to add up the melt value of all of the silver you can actually identify.
Personally, by the time this auction ends, I can see the price right at, if not over , $1000.00, but for me, that's about 3 times too high.

My philosophy about eBay is this : If I'm not sure about what I'm buying, then I don't buy it.

the fact they say they haven't looked or searched them scares me away. then the lone pic of the steel penny, I am guessing a couple hundred bucks of silver give or take??

That's what I'm thinking : " A Pig in a Poke ".

 

With silver at just under $16 an ounce, and "thousands" of copper wheats at 2 cents each, and a bunch of 10 cent common date Indian head cents, I'd question what I was actually getting.

Also the fact that it's in piles and not stacked to categorize...

It's a sucker's bet in my opinion. You might get lucky - but the guy seems to know about coins (mentions the 55 double-die cents, etc) and anyone that really does know about coins likely would do this in order to inflate what they are selling.

I'm going with common sense - if it was worth thousands, he'd market it as such.

Now, over a decade later, you saw a listing on eBay and you State the seller is switching up his story a lot.

Now you've asking if it worth the price or is it just an illusion to reel people in. Have you not learned from the past? Again, you admit to being foolish over a decade ago. If you are questioning the validity of the listing and the seller is changing his story why do you want to be foolish again?

I'm not trying to be mean or nasty, I just want you to realize what you are doing and asking. Please pass on this listing. There are numerous places you can go to accomplish what you want to do.

You don't need to buy someone else's collection to have a collection. A collection can start by buying one coin at a time. Think about what you want your collection to be and then how to go about making it a reality.

Yes I realized that but at the same time I wanted a bulk, genuine collection with a fair price I am not trying to complete a book persay but my father had two morgan's and wheats and I just bought my second morgan last night! More or less just this as a hobby makes me feel good. More knowledge and a different community! Thanks

 

OP, you just said it makes you feel good with your second Morgan purchase, there will be a lot more personal satisfaction to come imo if you continue to personally grow your own collection at your own pace rather then just buy someone else's off of ebay, especially those unsearched estate hoards. Happy collecting!!

 

This collection looks better (more legitimate) than others I have seen, but I would still never buy one without a mostly complete description of what I was getting or the ability to see it in person first.

Why take the risk?

 

Well I also like gambling which makes sense to buy estate sales etc. The only issue is the lying,, how many people have fakes etc. But I would never take a risk on buying a fake that's foresure. You all are right though

 

Heck... Most everything we do is a gamble. Makes life interesting. Sad thing is that far too many of these EBay marketers know how to put lipstick on a pig... And make it look good.

Assuming they're real.

These photos look like everything was just dumped out on a table for quick snapshots, but it's foolish to trust that that's the case. I assume these photos are carefully staged to imply the highest possible value for the collection. (For example, look at how the dimes are carefully distributed around the bars.)

I would assume that any stack of "silver" half dollars with a 90% coin on top has 40% coins for the rest of the stack -- if they didn't actually fiddle with the color balance to make clad coins look silver.

I would assume that any coins where I can't clearly see and identify the design, or clearly see the color of the edge, are not silver.

I would assume that there are no additional coins of value besides the ones pictured.

I would assume that if there are multiple photos appearing to show "piles" of silver coins, they're all showing the same coins, just rearranged between shots. (For example, there are several shots that show a Peace dollar, but there's never more than one Peace dollar in a shot; better assume there's only one Peace dollar in the lot.)

The lot is already bid up to $710. I'm not going to take the time to count up coins in (one of) the photos, but I'm pretty sure the lead bidder is already at serious risk of overpaying. There's no way I'd try to outbid at this point.

 

I'd suggest that you buy from the classified section here on the fourm .
That or put up a want ad, better chance of getting what you like and not getting ripped off by questionable sellers.

 

Most always you will find things like this picked thru already, only left with
the stuff that has very little value.

I buy too much stuff o e-bay too and can sympathize. Things to look out for are sellers with little feedback and sellers who say they don't offer returns (e-bay can help you out with them). Also sellers who keep all sales "private" often do so to keep you from seeing what they were selling.

 

I do love me some ebay man, it's very addicting. and yes apparently the person that bought it was happy.
