A stellar year indeed!! We're so lucky to have you here on CT. I imagine it was extremely difficult to order these. IMO there's no disputing your #1... its rarity and historical importance is unbeatable. (That writeup was definitely a highlight of the CT year decade.) As it happens I pretty much agree with the rest of your ordering too, but I think I'd probably bump up the Seleukos tet and the Caracalla Vesta temple by one notch each. For the Seleukos, is it the imperfectly centred obverse that keeps it down to #8 for you?
Thank you very much Joe, for gifting us with these wonderful and unique coins. I really can not stop admiring them. My favorite: due the historical importance, Athens diobol. By the eye appeal, Caracalla Vesta Temple aureus. Congratulations!
Beautifull coins, everyone one of them! You have exceptional taste, all are masterpieces in their unique style/ design. My favorite is the Thasos Hemidrachm, what a nice coin 2018 was a great year for you, I wish you the same for 2019 That Thasos piece is now on my wantlist..... I saw in the NFA auction catalogue a realistic portrait coin from Cleopatra VII/ she was not as good looking as Liz Taylor.
Thanks everyone for your kind words! I'm very grateful to have so many forum friends with which to share this obsession hobby Thanks Doug, I really appreciate it!
I don't mind the obverse centering on the tetradrachm (and, overall, I'm not as much of a stickler for centering as I probably should be... but we all have our priorities/preferences and every coin is a trade-off). It isn't higher on the list predominately because of its toning. It will eventually tone down to be grayer but right now, it is a bit unnatural. I like toning on coins but some just look too exaggerated - I think this is coin that I'll like more in five years than I do today if the cabinet toning gods cooperate.
My favorite best of post for the year, an amazing collection of coins @AncientJoe . Thank you for sharing , that was a real treat to view. Again Thank You.
all beautiful! My favorite is the Labyrinth, the Holy Grail of the sacred geometry behind the manifested universe and the journey of humanity.Native American-Hopi symbol of life
Wow, dude! That is a magnificent top 10, AncientJoe! The look Patrick and Spongebob have is the one I have every time I open one of your threads. I’d love to see your moon fragment. Do you have Martian meteorites? Meteorites are also cool. Erin
@AncientJoe , All of these coins are truly wonderful. The Seleukus tet and the A. Pius aereus are real stand outs. Of course my favorite coin of the bunch (and as I said recently in @Ryro 's thread) my favorite coin on all of CoinTalk is your Athenian gold diobol. The CT community is lucky to have you as a contributor.
I agree with Curtisimo! On two outa his three, My fav. is still the Thasos Hemidrachm, second the A. Pius Aureus, then the Athenian Diobol. But really all ten are special, probably had AJ posted all his 25+ coins for 2018.....all would be supberb! I certainly wish AJ a wonderfull Christmas, and a great 2019 in coin adventures. John
There is a Knossos stater with a circular labyrinth not too dissimilar to that depiction: These are very tough to find in any condition and I would love to add a circular example as well. I visited Knossos last year and was admittedly a bit disappointed with the site due to Sir Arthur Evan's (mis)interpretations. But, the coins don't disappoint!
An absolutely impressive group of coins. One of the coins on my bucket list is a Boscoreale aureus. That one is amazing. I only mention that one because i know that most of the others I simply could not afford. Wonderful coins.
