What you are seeing is a late die state or die deterioration. These usually exhibit extreme amounts of luster when in mint state.

 

What does the obverse look like?

That is one bugly quarter. The mint (ab)used that reverse die until there was nearly nothing left...

 

the Mint doesn't care about die deterioration.
they cared about making coinage for commerce.

unless you bought the coins for collectors, and not the stuff made for circulated.

 

This is how inferior coins became different coins became interesting coins became collectible coins, IN SOME PEOPLE'S MINDS. We need to wind that historical clock backwards and TEACH the sensible beliefs.

PLEASE free yourself from that need - it leads inevitably to clinical insanity.

 

research "Error" coins on the internet (though avoid YouTube and clickbait websites; only go to websites that had pages of information and no ads all over the place).

Then Write down what dates and mint marks to search through. Then you won't have to go through all your coins.

 

This. Youtube is the cesspool of the Numismatic community and any info gleaned from videos must be taken with a grain of salt. Too many self proclaimed "experts" using google for information and parroting it back in videos to make money off content and views.

Many of these kids have never cracked a coin book or bought a coin worth more than a few dollars in their life!!!

 

Serious question - why do you want to find an error?

 

Yes, inquiring minds want to know. I've been a serious collector for 55 years and never cared about them.

 

I collect minor errors just for kicks. You can go into any coin store and buy specific coins to fill albums. But try and put a collection together with errors and you have a different balkgame. For instance, you can (almost) put together a 1938 to date nickel collection from circulation (via coin roll hunting). But putting the same set together with only coins that have die cracks (for example) - bought or hunted - is almost impossible. But to me it's much more fun and satisfying. Again, it's just for kicks, no money will ever be made, and probably no one else would want it.

 

Your head is on straight. The newb fascination with errors is what I cannot fathom. I consider them a “graduate course” being obsessed about by incoming freshmen who need “remedial enrichment” work.
