Is this Machine Doubling?

I think it may just be machine doubling but I am new and learning as I go along. Any and all opinions are welcome and appreciated

The coin's fields seems suspicious from those photos. Are you certain of it's authenticity?

 

post full pictures front and back - of your Morgan Dollar ?

 

I got it off of Ebay a few months back not 100 % sure on authenticity

 

The weight is 26.5

 

it does not stick to a magnet

 

I don't know, I'm sure that someone has a better answer! It is interesting that the doubling appears on both sides of some of the letters.

 

Authentic? Maybe not. Doubled? Maybe so, maybe not. Regardless, that doesn't stop the ideologues from giving it a VAM number.

 

The actual weight of a Morgan is 26.73 so it's within an allowable range to pass that test. However that doesn't mean that it could not be a fake. Chinese counterfeiters get clever. I am not good at detecting counterfeit Morgans but I do know what they should weigh. Hopefully someone else with more knoweledge will weight in. What does the rim look like? Sometimes i know you can see a casting line where it was in a mold if it is a fake.

 

I hope it's just the angle that the picture was taken at, but the texture of the surface looks extremely rough. Would like to see more pictures with variable lighting.

It certainly looks "off" to me, but I'm no expert so I hope someone that is will be able to give some input.

 

This one below is fake, weighs what it should. Gotta be extra careful when buying Morgans and Trade dolars sight unseen.


And this one is fake, weighs what it should, and is 90% silver!!!

 

JCro, how did you determine these were fake?

 

A friend of mine owns a Fisherscope XAN machine to check if they were silver and not just silver plated, and they're both counterfeit because of the terribly mushy details and issues with the lettering and numbering

The first I can get done at my friendly neighborhood gold and silver buyer.
The second takes more knowledge/experience than I currently have.

I have some early French Indo-China 1 Piastres that are supposed to be silver.
I'm confidant of the ones I bought from reputable dealers. The others...not so much.
These are faked very often. One of my Piastres has chop marks.

I've always wanted a U.S. Trade dollar, but very expensive. The Piastres are the French trade dollar of the time. Recently purchased a Brittania trade dollar, though a new version, not an original old one.

I have a 1914 Chinese Fat Man, but I need to confirm if genuine.

I need some 8 Reales, preferably with chop marks.

I've been wanting to start a collection of Trade Dollars. U.S. and world wide.
Could be an expensive collection.

 

Those are some pretty real looking fakes wow no I am suspicious of mine also being a fake. Dang it I am going to get some better pictures up shortly

 

Are there any tests I can run at home to help find out if it is authentic or not

 

Cecilia , do you have a silver/gold test kit?
With a touchstone and various solutions of acid?

or find a pawnshop or Gold and Silver buyer who has an X-ray machine.They may test it for free, or charge something.

I'm sure more experienced members will have more, and better, ideas.

 

Unfortunately the Chinese are forging the coins on 90% silver for some of the scarcer dates, but this one has the appearance of a copy, so I doubt it is silver unless real.

This website is very intense in information on Morgans and Peace dollars, but you may have t use a lot of time. You can search for matching markers which are given VAM designation, but each year/mint might have large numbers . here is a link to 1883P. You can click on the camera image to see photos.

I noticed the stars were very mushy, which as I understand it indicates a fake. And the suggestion to take it to a shop looking for gold and silver to test it sounds like a good idea.
