Canadian silver maples seem like the superior bullion vs ASE

My late mother was from Canada, so I have a soft spot for their maples. Also I think their mint comes up with some really wonderful and varied designs. Most of my collection was ASE's proofs and Uncirculated. My newbie view is that the premiums from the US Mint and "same old" designs - especially given silver spot lows - is too much to accept. This year I bought no 2018 US mint silver.

One thing this thread hasn't touched on is the possible discount one sided coins carry. Especially for a large one ounce coin, only having one design that anyone in the world wants to look at severely limits the collectibility to me. If they fixed the milk spots permanently and kicked grandma off the coin I might be more interested.

I do not collect any British commonwealth basically due to this reason. I stick with interesting, two sided coins. :)

Grandma?!? I thought that was a hockey player. No wonder nobody in Victoria would answer my question as to which hockey player that was on all their money.

Loved your post. I’m joking about QE2, of course. I like commonwealth coins. Do you consider any U.S. coins to be one-sided? Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jefferson, Washington, Susan B, none are stunners.

The British mint has issued a 10-oz silver coin depicting a “George and the Dragon” scene on the reverse and “Grandma” on the other. Matches up nicely with the big Maple Leaf. I’m putting both on my Christmas list.

Though I think the Maple Leafs are the better buy, our Silver Eagles are among the prettiest bullion I’ve seen.

How much money does the US mint spend having a different reverse on each coin denomination?

I’m tempted to say “half” but it’s never that simple. I would guess the gov’t pays the designer once for each design. I doubt the prep costs are significant.

Canada solved a part of their problem by eliminating their penny. Maybe we should.

    From Time...
“The cost to produce the one-cent coin increased to 1.5 cents during 2016, the Wall Street Journal reported. In 2015, the penny cost 1.43 cents to make, while in 2014, its production value was 1.66 cents.

Despite efforts to cut the costs of manufacturing the copper coin, it seems unlikely that the cost of making it will ever sink below one cent.”

2016 Nickels cost 6.32 cents each to produce per Coin News.

The old penny discussion is a silly one, because the dime and quarter cost significantly less than face value to make, so unless people start hoarding nickels and pennies and we wake up one day losing money on minting money, I think we're still in pretty good shape.

Are you saying you approve of loss leaders for a “company” with trillions of dollars in debt? How long before inflation and pension liabilities makes dimes then quarters unprofitable? That company has a lousy track record where efficiency is concerned - I’m not buying.

Look around you, sir, the United States dollar is not only sound, as quite a few other world currencies are; it is literally THE MOST SOUND currency presently in use ANYWHERE in the world. And that includes the Swiss Franc. People who genuinely fear its collapse are lunatics.

Switzerland literally chose to tie its Franc to a fixed exchange rate with an inferior currency, the euro, because no nation can withstand having a currency that increases against others constantly. It destroys the domestic economy.

Your government schilling is as tedious as your trolling. I wrote about efficiency and profitability, you respond as any troll would, with a different topic.

I have no idea what your concept of “efficiency” even is. Define. In my opinion, even using terms like “efficiency” is itself trolling per se.

  17. You will like them. Top notch quality, I ordered a monster box, they ship these coins straight from the mint in hard capsules attached inside a sheet, 4 to a sheet and 6 sheets of coins, between the sheets they have padding to protect them. I got a box close to generic bullion bar premium over spot. Lowest entry price into monster boxes since its a 240 ounce box vs 500 ounce. The coins are nice and clean, real strong strike on them as well.

So strange RCM offers no info on this, they would probably sell more if they market this line better. Like I mentioned before I never knew they existed to recently.
