Great find! I found my first Indian Head penny about 2 boxes ago. It was a shock.

They were still trading Indian head pennies in the schoolyard back when I was in fourth grade. That would've been about 1953.

2 1/2 years ago I found my first mercury dime in a $250 box of dimes. that was a thrill. On average I'd find 1-2 silver Rossies dimes per $250 box

When one thinks about it, 1953 was less than 45 years since they were last minted. It's not too different these days from finding cents that were minted in the mid-70's and of course it's still pretty common to find cents in circulation from the 1960's and even earlier. What's interesting to think about is Indian Heads still turn up in rolls because the diameter of the cent for them is still the same. If large cents hadn't been discontinued (or if cent coins had always been their current size) I wonder how long it would have been common to find pre-1857 cents in circulation. Imagine buying a box of cents to go through in the present day and finding one from circa 1810.
