This year at the ANA banquet, I didn’t get to sit with the Mint’s legal counsel who argued the Langbord case, unlike last year, but I did get a chance to chat with him at the Mint’s booth. I wanted to know a little something about the 1933 that was voluntarily turned in to the Mint after the Langbord litigation was over.

Mostly I wanted to know if the owner was a “known name” in numismatics or some mystery man. And I got the answer.

He responded that “people who know people” in numismatics would instantly know the name, but it wasn’t a “household name” in the hobby. The name would be meaningless to the casual hobbyist, but one real involved people would know. I didn’t press.

I wonder though if the "11th coin" is the same one pictured in Alison Frankel's book on the Farouk coin. Her book was published before the Langbord hoard was revealed and showed one coin believed to be in private hands other than the Farouk coin. It's very unlikely the coin was one of the Langbord coins. But could this "11th coin" be the same one pictured in Frankel's book?

The number of coins known to exist is a little fuzzy now:

    2 in the Smithsonian

    Farouk coin

    10 Langbord coins

11th coin obtained by the Treasury Dept. which may or may not be the same as the one in Frankel's book

    So that's 14 or 15.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Is there a link to an article or story about this mysterious new specimen?

And I think calling it the "11th" is deceptive. We should call it the "14th"

There are at least two “known to be” outside the country.

It’s only the “11th” to have changed hands lately. It was the one lowest on the turning display at Philly. It appears to be as nice as the Langbord specimens, and maybe a tick below the Smithsonian ones.

There were others nabbed in the 1940’s, too. The grand total that Switted is believed to be 20, maybe as high as 24.

Ya gotz ta Switt it n’ quit it, baby!

The card on the new one said the previous owner turned it in because the Langbord case had proven it was stolen goods.

This year, my table got treated to a couple of bottles of Merlot, courtesy of your humble servant. Heck, my round trip travel bill was $66 and the ANA picked up my hotel tab. This year the ANA’s legal counsel, Hollie Wieland, was next to me. Two years. Two lawyers.

Having free legal advice at immediate hand is a VERY empowering thing. B'sides, Hollie is a fox. Board of Governors candidacies will be front and center at Pittsburgh in March.
