    Hi all,
A Dime. Minted 1978 in Philadelphia.

My wife and I were helping do a cleaning of my mother's apartment just getting rid of old stuff she had been keeping over the decades. She handed me a box full of old party favors she had saved, the kind you pin to your shirt. When I saw this particular one it brought back so many memories of me wanting the decoration that was glued to it.
1978 was the year. I wanted this Dime. Over the years I kept coveting it but was not allowed to take it.. Now 40 years later my mom finally told me "It's yours.. Take it"
Well here it is. Has a bit a glue residue on the Reverse and some toning. Let's see what I can do with it! :)

I also found this old button with a picture my dad and I took in Coney Island.. We loved going there! He got me started collecting coins!

It would make a nice center piece in a shadow box. :)

Why did you remove the dime from the ribbon? I would have left it on as a family heirloom. :panda:

Boy. You better put it in a safe place Paddyman. You'll catch mind boggling hell if you loose those heirlooms.

Neat gift. I found a dime that is soldered to a safety pin in my mothers stuff too. It doesn't have the nice ribbon though.

I always thought people did this for the March Of Dimes events, but after looking at your mothers it made me second guess that. After some research I think I know what these are People have been making these for years. They are called Dime-In-Pins. Supposed to be a pun for Diamond Pins. Some even come with a little carrot hanging from them. These are called 1 Carrot Dime-On-Pins.

Is this a dime I should keep if I have one? .I'm sorry I'm very new to this .. my mother passed away and left her collection for me to continue and also help fund my 5 kids in college but I have no background in coins

Are our dimes even the same ?

It is a common dime worth 10 cents, the dime in the op was special to him personally, not because it had monetary value.

No wonder mom wouldn't let you have that. The first thing you did was remove it from the pin. The ribbon is dated so obviously it means a lot to your mother. I'd like to hear that story!

Personally I would have left it as is. It belongs in your family as such. But it's yours and you can do with it as you please. I don't mean to sound rude but I feel very sentimental and certain things belong in the family for certain reasons.

Betty your dime is worth a dime.
Both of the dimes have sentimental value.
    But no monetary value.

I am sure this is stage one of restoring the piece as a whole. Lay off ;)
