    Saint Pierre & Miquelon - is a small islands near Newfoundland. These islands are belongs to France and has an area 242 sq.km. and a population about 6000.
    Islands was occupied by the French in 1604. Since 1702, St. Pierre & Miquelon belonged to Great Britain but in 1763 islands was returned to France.
    Now - it is a oversea department of France.

    The single mintage of the St. Pierre & Miquelon's currency was in 1948.

    Thia is a 1 franc 1948, aluminium, mintage - 600000. Minted in Paris.

    No, these are not rare. You can get both of them for a few dollars on eBay.

    I purchased this one years ago as part of the two coin set. Probably only a few dollars for both. If I actually found another that had actually seen circulation I would purchase it. These are the type of coins that I almost always see in uncirculated condition. A review of my collection would reveal that I really like to collect for historical purposes, not value and having this type of coin that actually saw use in commerce for a bit adds a type of value to me.

    Here is the second coin from that set.

    Are those two pieces of dried/smoked fish at the bottom of the reverse? If so, that's gotta be a first.
