I was going thru my coins recently and took new pictures with the new camera (below) and I decided I would get another batch of un-cleaned Romans again and help with my downtime and enjoyment. I decided to buy a bulk lot of 165 coins that are guess to be VF or better based on the lot. they are encrusted in soft dirt and I should get them in very soon and start posting the results. I think now that my modern Chinese set is winding down I can work on a fun set of Roman coins. Chris I hope to be able to add say 120 of those 165 to this nice collection. I will make sure to post before and after pictures of the coins in question once they arrive. They ended up being about $1.44 each.
I'm presuming that the lovely coins in the photo are your existing fully cleaned collection. They looked as if they mostly completed expert cleaning, with just a touch here and there of deliberately left crust on a few to give a feeling of antiquity. Nice coins.
Wow... does this mean that the coins in the photographs came from an uncleaned lot-- even the silver? I wish you great luck but these days I don't think you'll find any uncleaned lots with coins of such quality. Edited: can you pictures of just the second coin? (the Caracalla denarius, VICT PART MAX)
These in the pictures above were all in an uncleaned lot from 3+ years ago. The 1st two silvers were bought cleaned.
In addition to the style being off, the coin has a cast appearance. Here's the listing from Forum Ancient Coins "Fake Coin Report" gallery: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pos=0 The FAC gallery coin: The coin brittania40 bought from eBay:
Well my 168 uncleaned Roman coins came today with my pencil cleaning set. Untouched as recieved After rising with distilled water. Now they are taking a DW bath.
This one is scarce. Here is one of mine of the same type though from a different mint. Constantine I Antioch mint 337 to 347 AD Obvs: DV CONSTANTINVS PT AVGG, Constantine veiled right. Revs: IVST VEN MEM, Aequitas standing facing, head left, scales in right hand, scroll in left. SMANI AE 14x16mm, 2.08g RIC VIII 64
I can’t wait to see the progress you make cleaning some of those heavily encrusted romans under your new magnifier @britannia40 . Take lots of pics!
The Constantine campgate in row 6 is a fantastic piece. Man... it's been too long since I've got a new campgate, they're fun little coins to collect. How well do those cleaning pencils work?
