What to do with very small amounts of scrap?

What is the best way to handle very small amounts of scrap? Maybe people who metal detect can best advise on this. But, I am talking about a few pieces of scrap Sterling jewelry, a couple small pieces of 14k gold, etc. It's MAYBE $25 worth of silver of gold.

It's been sitting here forever. Would you hang on to it, ask a coinshop if they'll buy it, talk to one of those crooks at the cash for gold places?

Scrap PM's can be sold at coin dealers, jewelry stores, gold buying services and other places. You won't get much for it. If it were me I'd tuck it away, add to it as the occasion arises and hold for higher prices. It sounds like you have to little to be bother with disposal at this time.

I would put it in a very small scrapbook.

Nice of you to offer, but I have no intention of ever conducting any business on cointalk so that I may keep my identity concealed.

    Fair enough.
Good luck keeping a low profile on the internet.

And the rules prevent any B/S/T posting except in the advertising section

It is an eyeopener when a member actually does try to sell their scrap to a refiner for either cash or exchange for rounds. Unless one is in your backyard, shipping both ways is expensive with insurance and mailing receipts. Purity is often much less than one thought in their mind if not marked .99 or .999 , plus prices are determined by the bullion prices on days processed , not necessarily when thought it should have been . One club member saved kgs of sterling silver from yard sales/swap meets and made a profit of 8% in the end. The risk factor of buying the scrap is there also if you do not have a field analytical device that works.

Maybe the individuals aren't crooks, but getting 25% of melt is not, should we say, competitive?

    Oops! My bad.
My local G&S store buys at <25% of spot.

I suppose I"ll just hang on to it and throw it in the next time I sell a group of better stuff at the coin shop. Perhaps with a bigger bullion sale I will get a decent price for the scrap as opposed to trying to sell it on its own.
