Okay well. I got one roll of pennys yesterday... I put in slots I didn't have. And today I went to search them a little but i Think I might have it.... please not to get mad at me. I know many people think they have it but it's always a guessing game on this. 1982 D small date........ I didn't want to post it and get embarrassed but here goes.
Yup, looks like it. 1982 D Small Date Copper plated Zinc and keep in mind there are all these varieties. but i'm sure you wrote it down next to you as you search from that one article The 7 Business Strike Varieties (8 total with the 1 rare one): 1982 Large Date Copper 1982 Large Date Copper plated Zinc 1982 Small Date Copper 1982 Small Date Copper plated Zinc 1982 D Large Date Copper 1982 D Large Date Copper plated Zinc 1982 D Small Date Copper plated Zinc 1982-D small date copper (1 known to exist). This is the one all the fake youtube videos are made for thinking you can find one making it seem they are readily available and easily found. There is also a 1982-S Large Date which is not included because it is a PROOF. @paddyman98 @CoinCorgi
Don't be embarrassed at all. I think you are doing a stupendous job absorbing this whole coin collecting mystery. That said, I don't have a clue if you have the right piece or not! I was never an error/varieties guy. And these days I couldn't read the date on a cent without a 16X magnifier! You will get your answer in short order I am sure.
Weight makes a big difference - 2.5 grams = $0.01 / 3.1 grams = BANK Here's hoping yours is the latter
Just remember, there are small date 1982 D cents. They are "copper plated zinc" the rare one is the copper. Looking at the surface scratches yours would be plated. But you can weigh it. 1952 – 1982 is 95% Copper and 5% Tin & Zinc; 3.11 grams 1982 – Current is 97.5% Zinc and 2.5% Copper; 2.5 grams
Just does my old heart good to see a younger generation enjoying the hobby the way it is supposed to be enjoyed.
Every coin enthusiast should have a small digital scale - they're cheap and plentiful on amazon.com and elsewhwere - this is typical = 100 g. capacity, 0.01 g. accuracy, $10. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y61YW7...&pd_rd_r=4acb4a45-86cb-11e8-8b8e-bbc6d9adcba6
There are several varieties of "D" cents as per my first post. Two LARGE DATE 1982 D Large Date Copper 1982 D Large Date Copper plated Zinc Two SMALL DATE 1982 D Small Date Copper plated Zinc - weighs 2.5 grams 1982-D small date copper (1 known to exist). This is the one all the fake youtube videos are made for thinking you can find one making it seem they are readily available and easily found. weighs 3.11 grams The weight is related to how it was made 1952 – 1982 is 95% Copper and 5% Tin & Zinc; 3.11 grams 1982 – Current is 97.5% Zinc and 2.5% Copper; 2.5 grams The 1952 - 1982 Cent is mostly a chunk of Copper. Whereas in 1982 the new cent is thinly plated copper which of course comes in a Small Date version.
if you dont' have a scale the bottom of this page gives an idea of how to weight, though not 100% accurate http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1982.html basically a tongue depresser /popsicle stick on a pencil. Test first with 2 same date cents, then try the other one on it. here's an interesting read about the transition to the new cents https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/646/
I don't have a scale either. Probably never will. But a time or two I have been known to put a coin on my stamp machine at work. Always is another way to skin a cat.
remember your Split Plating ? https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1992-penny-has-a-lot-of-slpit-plating-issues.319671/ the copper layer is so thin it is easily damaged either by the mint process itself, or by scraping, etc. So you can see the Zinc below it. So if you see any bluish-silver colors that would be the zinc such as what I think I see on the 2, 9 and "D". But it's just a picture so I could be seeing things. So the weight really matters.
I don't collect modern coins—I'm an ancients collector but I couldn't help following some of your posts, @Shrews1994 ! I just wanted to say that I admire your attention to detail.
I agree. Terrific to have you here with your enthusiasm @Shrews1994 . A lot of us old men have seen it/done it all.
I am glad that you are a girl looking for coins. I am excited about your enthusiasm. It is so refreshing to see more females getting into coins. enjoy the hunt/search.
