So I'm thinking of putting together a set of 1 ounce silver bullion coins from around the world. I'm wanting to focus on countries that have produced on-going series such as the US Eagle and the Canadian Maple Leaf. I'm not interested in adding in the single one-year commemoratives that a lot of countries have produced. Here is my list that I've put together (with a little help from Wikipedia). Have I missed anyone? Should I take any of these out of the list? Just focusing on 1 ounce silver at this time: Armenia Ark Australia Koala Austria Philharmonic Benin Elephant Canada Maple Leaf China Panda Kazakhstan Irbis Mexico Libertad New Zealand Kiwi Somalis Elephant Ukraine Angel UK Britannia US Eagle
The wiki article had a Cameroon coin running from 2011 to 2013. Doesn't look like it was an ongoing series. After I get the first group put together, I may go back and start adding the one-offs and short-types.
Australia has added the Swans as an annual, plus the annual Lunars (now into the second cycle of those) and even the annual Kangaroos. Australia is busy. Canada has an annual lunar series too. Chinese annual lunars come in round, scalloped, and fan shapes (and rectangles if you decide to do 5 oz).
I'm thinking of just focusing on the 1oz rounds for this first set to maintain consistency throughout the set.
Niue Hawksbill Turtle Krugerrand 1 oz silver BU and proof minted last year and they will apparently mint another proof in 2018. Not sure if the bullion will be minted again.
Kooks and Koalas change their design each year - Kangaroos (2016 -) seem to be the plain vanilla bullion coins - the design has remained unchanged, only the year is updated annually.
Australia started making Wedge -Tailed eagles in silver, gold, high relief and DCAM (regular coin). They started with them in 2014 at the new Perth mint. They are designed by John Mercanti, designer of the ASE. The 2014 and 2015 are extremely popular. The Wedge-Tailed eagle is spectacular in those first two years and they had a fairly low mintage. May want to look into these as well.
Be careful, you might really go overboard like I did. I started my collection 10-11 years ago and there is no end in sight. I started off trying to collect one coin from as many countries as I could. Then I got caught up in collecting different series. After that I went after the keys. The coins I have collected have cost me anywhere from $20-$40 each. There are several I have paid over $100 for and one I paid $400. The further back you go into the series, the more they cost. I would suggest starting off with one each from your list and build from there. I currently have a list of coins I need to fill gaps in some of the series and the longer I put it off, the harder they are to find. I recently put a book together that you can view: the link is on this post: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/book-on-silver-bullion-coins.315464/ or you can download the PDF file: I had to compress the PDF so I could upload but it still looks OK
@sonlarson, that is very nice. I would probably start smaller than that where I would have only one representative 1-oz round from each country. If I used your list as a starting point (which is more extensive than my original list), that would be 24 coins in the initial set (assuming I counted correctly) and then add to it as I discovered new countries.
That's the point. I did start small. One coin from each country. It just snowballed from there. But now you have a little better idea of what is out there. Have fun, that's what counts.
The Austrailian Perth mint released a 2 once Koala coin a Piedmont minted coin, I have one it has reverse proof details, nice coin, it came in a flip, I am trying to find a capsule that fits it none available yet.
Try Air-Tite X6D-40mm. The X6D-38mm fits the 2 ounce Queens Beast, which should be about the same thickness.
England, Canada and Australia have a multitude of bullion coin series and yearly varieties - once QE ll dies or abdicates, Prince Charles will become Charles lll or George Vll and his portrait will be on all future coinage - QE ll coins will probably increase in value, so get yours soon
