Just curious to your sentiments as I am an ebay seller. I've personally both bought and sold on ebay. I think ebay makes it easier on buyers but is harder on sellers.

Being mostly a buyer on eBay, I am pleased. Now if they would just get rid of the counterfeits.

The Problem is Ebay has no viable competition. Ebay is for all intents and purposes a Monopoly when it comes to Coin auctions and selling coins on an online website. No other place comes close to the number of users Ebay has and therefore tons of people want to become Ebay Sellers. I can still remember the days when Yahoo Auctions was a viable competitor to Ebay. But then Ebay bought Paypal and Paypal would not let Yahoo Auctions use it as a Payment Processor. The fact that no Anti-Trust case was brought against Ebay Proves America is nothing more than Crony Capitalism. I also remember the Good Old Days when you could take cash, checks, money orders, COD, whatever you wanted as payment, then Ebay got Greedy and wanted to get into the payment processor business. Back then Sellers were valued and fees were only 3%.

What Counterfeits? Isn't that a violation of Ebay Policy?

Which is why people still sell there and will as long as eBay doesn't get to greedy like the auction house that could have been the new eBay did. As of now eBay is the best place to sell many coins, if they raise the fees so they're the same as the auction houses people will just use the auction houses and not deal with the nonsense.

At some point that could happen anyway, as they keep trying to emulate the Amazon model without having any of the support or overhead or infrastructure.

No, no it doesn't at all.

Just look for bullion, Morgan dollars, rare Seated Lib dollars, etc. You'll see them. Or just looks at the posts on here.

I've bought a lot there, because the sheer volume and variety and competition among sellers allows for good buying opportunities. But at the same time I know I've overpaid on overgraded raw coins, or gotten cleaned coins not advertised as such, etc. eBay is the kingdom of problem coins. So any bargains Ive gotten have been offset by the bad purchases.

For those reasons I now try to spend more of my money at local coin shops in my area. I can get silver eagles cheaper there than on eBay AND inspect them first and often choose from several. I'm really only buying on ebay if i can't find it in a shop or if a bargain jumps out at me when I'm thumbing thru last minute auctions.

This is not a statement on the OP at all..... I do my bullion business with an established vendor, Apmex. I don’t buy bullion as a collectibles. I buy it as bullion to divvy up between grandkids when my time draws near..... To me it seems there is an integrity issue at hand with many EBay sellers. I have purchased a few coins successfully on EBay. However I hold my breath until the piece is in my hands. I rather feel I been lucky. My deals will continue to be primarily face to face transactions...... That’s just me and not at all a statement on the OP.

I buy bullion on eBay, but only from a few sellers that I trust. Apmex and JM Bullion two of the sellers.

For those people who do not have a local coin shop within 1 hours of their house eBay revolutionized the way they could buy and sell coins and bullion. I have bought a lot of 90% on eBay and never had a problem. I just wait till I see a good deal.

I buy on ebay, it's like a giant flea market, some sellers have good stuff and some have junk, you just have to know what you're doing.

Why not buy from their site direct ? Must be saving a couple %?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. I generally buy from JM Bullion direct, but APMEX has higher shipping rates, so I try to buy on eBay where it's "free". It really all depends on what, and how much I'm looking to buy. I also buy from MCM on eBay. Great pricing and every transaction I've had has been excellent.

That kind of answers it. I was asking if there was percentage cheaper on Ebay. You answered it. I did not really check with both on Ebay, of course if I can save 10 bucks I will. I might also go back to them and challenge them to sell direct cheaper figuring out what % they pay for Ebay and splitting the difference with them.
Listing fees, but the % fees they pay are hefty, maybe 5% ?

Probably way less for them. Like 2-3% maybe. There’s no way sellers of that size are paying standard eBay fees
