Bullion "investing?" Is that actually a good title for the forum? Some of us are just: Bullion buying? Bullion collecting? Bullion insurance? I buy a small amount of bullion each year as insurance, basically. At the least, bullion keeps pace with inflation. It's a way to make sure a tiny part of my money will at least keeps its value. When I buy bullion I am under no illusion that I could make more money with it than I could in stocks or bonds. But, that would carry risk. Do you think the forum is named correctly?
I sold a piece the other day is there a winners circle section? It boils down to the Old Adage of everyone does it different. I had to scroll back up top to see if I was still on CoinTalk.com
You have a very fair point, especially considering how most novices view metals (or coins for that matter).
This has come up in the past, and most who 'collect' bullion for various reasons often claim that they are investing in an uncertain future. There are few collectors who have none in their possession and few that have only bullion in their possession. Some invest using options and contracts. If we named it for the majority of new members, it could be called "Getting rich with bullion quickly" as that is the main thesis. Some just like getting something for nothing other than their time ( hunting bank boxes for a few silver coins), but that was possible 10 or more years ago. I remember bank boxes of halves that were 25% silver, but those days are long gone, but the writers of webblogs and youtubes still make it seem it is still happening. I don't think the title will be changed. Jim
Meh... most of the posts are bullion related...and just about every bullion forum has the same type of banter going on... heck, almost all of them have the 1 clown that believes he knows all and really knows nothing... but I'm not going to name names
Bullion coins for saving/insurance/storm, investment, hobby/collecting/fun. A little of everything for me I guess.
If you want to know if this form is named correctly just start a thread asking “What’s the best way to invest in silver” ...the majority of the answers will be “it’s stupid to invest in silver”
I invest in stocks and bonds and a lot of people would call me stupid. The subject of “investments” draws all sorts of opinions — ranging from thoughtful observations to incoherent nonsense coming from fools and trolls.
My personal standard is that if it doesn’t have an income flow, it’s not an investment; it’s speculation.
Gee whiz, Jim. I'm sorry if being of the same opinion as Warren Buffett makes me some kind of radical in your eyes, or perhaps ill-suited for life on CoinTalk. (Actually, I'm NOT sorry, not even a little bit.)
But yet Warren Buffet is not against speculation in his "investment" fund. Remember he had a large silver position once. Plus, if you have enough you can rent it out and get current income from it, so it is a very blurry line, one which does not really help. If you think of your pm as mathematically lowering your volatility of your entire portfolio, its really an investment. If you like pretty coins, its your hobby money. Personally I am in the latter.
I'm the latter, too. My collection includes aluminum, brass, zinc (some plated, some not), and just about any other alloy ever used for coins. It contains a fair bit of silver, and a little (none added this millennium) gold. I sold off almost all my gold in August 2011.
Besides, there's nothing inherently wrong with speculating, provided that you're not calling it "investing". https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/09/difference-between-investing-speculating.asp
