My first gold coin was a 1915 $5 Indian piece that I bought at a local coin show years ago. The obverse on that coin is awesome. The tales of the incuse design are interesting also...eeewwww, don't touch it, it's covered in germs...

 

I’ll post only because my very first gold coin happens to be very much of interest to me at this moment.

In 1973 I was a young teen. My mother was also young, single and worked constantly to keep me fed and clothed. I emulated her work ethic and worked two jobs myself. I delivered newspapers every morning and pumped gas at night. Most of that went to records and goofy clothes but I also amassed a fine teenage coin collection. My local dealer loved my zeal for coins and helped me pay some each week toward a very well worn common half eagle. I don’t remember the amount. Maybe a hundred bucks, but was a kings ransom to this kid.

Mom was quite the supporter of my collection and would sit with me as I would swoon over my coins. We spent many evenings swooning together over that half eagle. A sparking gem in a poor families home. She gave me a Diebold steel mini safe as a birthday gift to keep my gold secure that I treasured near as much as the coin itself.

Fast forward now to 2018. Mom is the perfect happy image of a retired schoolteacher spending all her time fawning over grandkids. Myself, I am comfortable. The old worn half eagle is still mine.... However I have taken that half eagle to a jeweler to go into an upscale gold rope mount with a 20” heavy gold rope chain. The piece is at the jewelers now in fact. Once it is done it will be presented to Mom on Mother’s Day. The presentation will arrive in the old Diebold safe mom gave me all those many years ago hopefully making my saintly mother feel recognized as the truly special person that she is.

Edit.... Changed my mind. Not an entry post. @lordmarcovan you give your generous offering of gold to these young collectors that do not have any. I just enjoyed telling the story.

I've only owned a few gold coins over the years. The first was a $2.50 Gold Indian that I won in a raffle at my local metal detecting club meeting. I don't remember the date off hand. But I sure loved seeing that little piece of precious in my hand. I was only able to keep it for a couple of months when hard times hit and I had to sell it to get some bills paid. Currently I do not own any gold, but I would like to change that sooner rather than later. . So ( Entry Post )

My first gold coin was a 1909 $5 given to me by my father in the 1950's when I was still collecting US coins. He had bought a few from a man he knew at face value back in the day when such coins were only available if you forgot to turn them in in 1933 or if they were out of the country. I don't know which route my coin took but the previous owner was Italian so either is possible. I never thought much about it until I got into coin photography and wanted to practice on a gold coin. I dug it out of the box it was in with my childhood Whitman folders and assorted numismajunk and made these three images. All are the same coin on the same day but light arrangement changed. The Indian gold is not the easiest coin to light because of its combination of raised and recessed design. I have no plans for the coin so it should be found with story attached by my heirs in that same box of junk where it has been for over 60 years now. The coin has been $5 and then $35 an ounce. I could see how it could be again. It makes no matter in the company it keeps.

I really cannot tell which was my first gold coin, but I can tell which were my first gold coins. Back around 2007 I decided that all the news indicated that PMs were going to go way up. I'd already been buying silver but had not yet got into gold. I decided it was time to get some so when it was around $700/oz I bought a dozen each of Italian 20 Lire, Dutch 10 Gulden, and France 20 Francs. Since then I have sold some of them for a nice profit but still have most. I've probably posted pictures of many of them here in various threads.

my first gold coin i purchased were 2 American 1 ounce gold Eagles the first year they were minted which i believe was 1986 which i purchased for $500 each from the U.S.mint, they were gorgeous and the pride an joy of my small collection, unfortunately, about five years later i fell on hard times and had to sell them at a loss at $480 each, (along with 90% of my collection), a decision i regret to this day, i figured i could always replace them, after all they were just $500, well time passed and gold started to rise and i never did replace them and to this day i still do not own an American 1 ounce gold Eagle, since then i have never sold another coin that i've collected, every time i think about selling a coin i get this dread feeling that it will be gone forever and never get replaced.....

The first of the very few (3) Gold coins I have ever purchased was a gift for my wife's birthday in 2008. She is a huge fan of Koalas and has been collecting figurines, stuffed bears, prints, and other Koala related items forever. bought her an Australia 1/25th ounce Gold Koala from Australia. 2008 Kip Koala, mintage 10,000.



I don't recall what I got her in 1998, but for her birthday in 1988 I purchased 2 Australian 1/10 Platinum Koalas and had them made into earrings. I paid $75 each for the coins, which was a $15 premium each over the $600 per ounce that Platinum was selling for at the time. I had to go to 5 jewlers before I found one that would work with Platinum. We decided to use white gold to make the mounts. I think I paid about $368(back in 1988!) to have the custom work done. She wore them several times and always got multiple compliments. I finally stored them in my SDB to avoid losing them. The last appraisal we got from another jeweler, which I think is a little high, was $2000. 1988 was the first year of issue on this coin with a mintage of around 42,000. They are currently selling for around $250.
Was it worth it to have them mounted? I think so. How much would one pay today for a unique piece of jewelry?



Her birthday comes up in July so I need to start looking now for something.

BTW, the other 2 gold coins were also gifts, one for my daughter and the other for my son.

 

To the best of my ability, I don’t think these coins are from Sind. I own one of the small silver coins from the same period and they don’t look anything like this. Unfortunately, I don’t know what they actually are. So maybe somebody will find out what they are. This image comes from worldofcoins.eu

 

Oh, and I got a 1/40 of an ounce of gold two years ago as a gift (those photos were my first coin photos, so they’re unsurprisingly bad).
When I get a salary I will probably buy a half eagle. Oh, and happy Easter! This is a coin that commemorates the 1900th anniversary of the Cruxifiction of Christ.
