I’ve been saving money & might be able to buy 1 of each gold and platinum coins. I prefer coins versus rounds. I’m also a collector. I know I should buy as close to spot as possible. But I am willing to pay a little more for a nice design. What coins would you all recommend? I appreciate your input/interest!!

    Thanks!!

When I buy 1oz gold coins I get Maple Leafs. I dont like the ones with old queen on them but the younger QEII isn't too bad to look at :p Plus, I can get them pretty close to spot.

    Buffalo for gold
for platinum, proof 2007, with the shield on reverse. I have both (one example of the buffalo)
wish I could get the frosted freedom though

I took a look at the 2007 coin. Definitely a nice design but more than a little more over spot lol

Don't buy platinum as an investment: too unpredictable. If you are buying it for its numismatic value then go with what appeals to you the most.

As for gold, AGEs are a good deal if you want an investment. Buffaloes are more expensive but may be better long term. That's assuming you are in the USA. If in a different country which produces one ounce gold coins then that country's products may be better.

If you like the proof platinum Eagles, I wouldn't give up on them as one can find certain 1 oz versions going for $50-$100 over spot in some auctions. Many bullion platinum coins have almost the same premium over spot, so a proof may be a slightly better value (and more appealing as the design changes while the bullion ones have had the same design since the series started in 1997).

Personally, i would avoid buying platinum coins only because since 2012 there the
Only PM that is in the minus down -3 % everything else is in the plus, gold is over
+25 % in the same time period so a much better investment over the long haul.

As far as which Gold coins to invest in, that is a personal preference, i like the
South African Krugerrand in 22K, and the Queens beast in 24K.

Hi mpcusa, thanks for the suggestions/advice. I ended getting the Queen's Beast Black Bull!! it was only $27 and change over spot. That is about 2% over spot if my math is correct. So seemed like a good deal to me!!!

    Great get :)

One of my favorite things about the Queens Beast is that there is a new design each
Year most other bullion coins stick with the same design and only the year changes
would love to see a pic, i will post mine here in a minute.

Not sure that buying what's up and ignoring what's down is the way to get ahead -- or do you avoid buying cereal when it's on sale, too? ;)

Gold Eagle or Gold Buffalo if you want a one ounce coin. Recognizable and the most popular in the U.S. thus, easier to sell.

Exactly - follow Warren Buffet's credo - buy what everyone is selling, and sell what everyone is buying. Platinum has much more room to increase in the future because it is unloved right now.

Usually more than one a year. She is in her mid-90's, so they don't have a lot of time to finish the series.

Personally, I like the ASE fractional (1/10, 1/4) gold coins. I know the cost basis a bit bigger but you can still find deals out there.

This lets you buy more often and dollar cost average if gold dips in price.

I’ve bought 1/10 before but it’s so small!! I like feeling the weight of that full ounce!!! Plus having a bigger canvas gives artists more freedom, in my opinion, to design something really fantastic!!
