I’m trying to date this Pontos Amisos within a reasonable range. I see 111-105 and 95-85 for similar coins but don’t know for sure. Anyone have any tips? Attribution is somewhere around SNG BM 1154 AE 18 7.93g
Whenever I'm trying to date something I usually start by complimenting them and asking what they are into
The fast and likely to be accurate (insofar as the current scholarship) method: Go to CNG's archives and find the most recently sold match to your coin, and copy that . Their catalogers are knowledgable and seem to stay current. The scholarly method: Go to CNG's archives and find many examples, paying attention to the most recent listings. See which references are cited. Find those books. Begin with the one most recently written; work your way back in time to other sources if needed. Hopefully some of the books are more than just inventories; maybe they'll have some hoard evidence or other means of establishing a date. If that fails, google for journal articles related to the type.
Has anyone seen this book? Perhaps the long reign which broke into periods around the three wars with Rome can be associated with coin types??? https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=307167
The OP type is HGC 7, 241 in Oliver Hoover's Handbook of Coins of Northern and Central Anatolia. Their number covers all monograms and varieties with and without the star and crescent in the upper left field (not present on yours). I'm not sure if the monograms and the control marks change the dating, but HGC goes with the following for the type: "c. 111-105 BC or c. 95-90 BC (?)". That's good enough for me. I have one from another Pontic mint. PONTOS, Chabakta AE21. 8.4g, 21.2mm. PONTOS, Chabakta. Struck under Mithradates VI, circa 111-105 BC, or 95-90 BC. HGC 7, 263 (S); SNG Cop 205-6. O: Head of Ares in Attic helmet. R: XABA-KTΩN, sword in sheath; star above crescent in field, monogram to left.
Thanks everyone for all of the help. Big thanks to @zumbly for sharing info from the handbook. I was wondering about the monograms and control marks, too.
