Much more interesting is the information provided by @Paddy54 who confirmed the variety attribution.

In Flynn&Zack this is 1858 PR Repunched Date RPD-002, described as "Repunched Date 1858/158 Repunched 1 south seen below the serif. Repunched first [SIC] 8 south seen below the top. Repunched 5 south seen below the top."



Now here is where it gets even more crazy - note the PR? That means it's usually seen in PROOF coins. Either the proof dies were used later on for business strikes (a frequent occurrence in 3CS) or this is actually an impaired proof.

I don't know which I more want it to be, one of 1,603,700 business strikes from a proof die or one of ~80 surviving proofs out of the 210 (300?) proofs that circulated...

I lean towards business because I can't see the mint NOT using two perfectly good die pairs for business strikes after they were done striking a few hundred proofs. The reference book doesn't list the # of dies used. But does for the slightly smaller mintages of 1856 and 1857 (25/25 and 18/11 [obv/rev] respectively).

World upside down time:

When slabbing started, NCI started offering an optional slab. The insert on the slab label states "not valid without certificate" - that's right they were saying that the grade on the plastic coffin was only valid with the attached piece of paper...

What happened is most people lost or threw out the certificate and it's fairly uncommon today to find an NCI slab let alone a slab with its certificate.


Most dealers just want to get rid of the slabs, but the showy presentation pieces like this one command a few $...

Same die was used on his as the mate I found in proof... it was like watching the Patty Duke Show all over again...only this time in Living color ....but their cousins... identical cousins....

The populations of '61 proofs are 1000 w/ 500 estimated to survive, vs. 210/80 for the '58s so a little better. Think of it as a bigger challenge for your awesome skills...

@Paddy54 was closest to the $125 price....surprisingly this one sat on eBay for a bit before being discounted to 125 and finally selling...hopefully the buyer enjoys it as the coin was as cool as the holder!
