Last week I bought two Ancient Greeks on EBay. They fulfill my Greek God collection so I’m happy. I checked the ancientforumcoins.com fake eBay sellers to make sure and checked for the coins which weren’t listed as being modern copies. I checked the sellers reviews and other products they sold to double check. They came in today, so I always like to try finding them on wildwinds.com. I did find both of them but they are slightly different. The first is: Magnesia ad Meander, Ionia 350-190 BCE AE 14mm, 1.93g BMC 17-8 Laureate head of Apollo facing left. Reverse Butting Bull right with Meander pattern behind, MAG (Magnesia) above and XIMAP (Chimar) magistrate on left (I don’t have the Gamma for MAG). Which magistrate is that? I’ve seen many but not that one. I’ll add the second coin in a bit, it’s tough to photograph with my limited lighting.
that guy's liable to come on here and harass ya for using his pics..just a heads up...someone has done it i don't know if it was him for sure...
The second coin: Phoenicia, Sidon 78 BCE AE 23, 7.8g Obverse Jugate busts of Tyche, veiled and turreted and Zeus right. Reverse is War Galley left CF. SNG Cop 221. Rouvier 1410. Questions: Why would Zeus be foreshadowed? What's that symbol behind their head on the obverse?
This sort of behavior is exactly why I would never order something from Zeus Gallery. That said, nice coins!
well, legally he can since he has a (C) on his picture of the coin, even tho you've bought it.. i guess he was the one who came on before and threaten to sue another member for using his pic of a coin the member bought... we don't do zeus-gallery anymore for that reason.. but those are nice coins
Are we completely confident that this is actually Zeus Gallery, and not somebody trying to make trouble for them? If so, I'll happily pick up a pitchfork and join the crowd, not that I'm in their potential customer base anyhow...
go to 1st line of red-spork's comment and make up your own mind friend..i don't wanna spread any hate or black propaganda..
I would say Zeus Gallery's threats are pretty empty. There was a long discussion about this question in this thread, if you're interested: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/th...ni-not-ancient-but.309743/page-2#post-2973648
@Clavdivs i'm sorry it your post got off track.. i think that symbol is the one for king, if i'm not mistaken... maybe someone who knows will chime in shortly friend
I don’t know what that symbol is but why’s Zeus behind Tyche? Shouldn’t Tyche be behind Zeus? A little mix up at the mint perhaps. I’m not Claudius, by the way.
The magistrate is Χίμαρος (Chimaros). See Friedrich Imhoof-Blumer, Monnaies grecques, page 291 for an example. (In French). [Many years ago I digitized the best database of magistrates on Greek Coins, a book by Muensterberg, and put it on my web site at http://snible.org/coins/library/muensterberg/ . I had planned to make it into a search engine but lost interest so you have to click and search around a bit to use it.]
The question is whether it was actually Zeus Gallery that created that account and made that post. Do they have a record of doing the same thing in other forums?
A quick Google search doesn't turn up other instances of "ZEUS_GALLERY" and "image" except the thread above. Given the poor grammar and ALL-CAPS in the one and only post here from "Zeus Gallery", I'm inclined to think it wasn't an official response, and might have been sabotage. Before I'd jump on any boycott bandwagon, I'd reach out to the eBay seller and ask if they were aware of the post here. But again, ancients aren't my field, so I wasn't ever a potential customer.
Look, it is not a matter of being "foreshadowed" in my understanding. There is some reading that might help your understanding of the goddess traditions of these ancient peoples. Maybe someone here could recommend some good books. Zeus and many of the Olympians are just children- yes children of the great goddess. Tyche was for some a local face of the mother of the gods. Like Zeus may carry the lightningbolt but the goddess IS the thunder. The oldest traditions have her - specifically Tyche as the daughter of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys- far older dudes than the Olympians. A lot of political maneuvering went on with all this also. He may flex political might and authority but she steers the ship and provides the essentials of life. Read up on Eleusian mystery tradition. Nice coins btw Sweet patina on the OP.@Jbruce .
