So i was on eBay looking for a 2017 PCGS slabbed Panda and came across some things that were troubling.

1.) The first coin I was looking to purchase had a PCGS Cert number that didn't come up on their website. #26631491

2.) I found another coin lot of 2 (same Panda year, same grade but different label variety) with the exact same Cert number.

3.) I called PCGS customer service and they told me the Cert number was only available to view internally (not on their website) and it's for a graded bullion Silver Eagle. They told me to pass on the coins.

I could understand stock photos, but this is very suspect. I'd be happy to post a link to the coins. Why would a bid dealer use a stock photo with a bogus cert number?

Stock photos most likely. Some companies photoshop coins into generic label pictures they have to make it look better or whatever. I wouldn’t be overly concerned about a problem with those but I wouldn’t expect to get anything with those Cert numbers either. They probably used a Cert that was in their submission system for it

Both sellers state that they are stock photos.

When I search '26631491' with google images, I get a series of different coins' stock images. So it is apparently the 555-5555 of PCGS cert numbers for some professional photographer who works with stock images.

Thanks for the info. I'm not really into buying slabbed bullion, but it's easier for me to store it that way. Plus I have always liked the Pandas. I just didn't understand why that Cert didn't show. Thanks again.

You will always be able to check the cert number, if it doesnt come up, then
it,s fake and you can always check this out first before you buy, simple solution.

Stock photo. I wouldn't worry too much, if the coin you buy isn't in the system, then you may want to figure out what is going on...

@mpcusa I called PCGS customer service and they said punt, but from what others have said the photos may have been photo shopped to create a stock photo. Still fishy that 2 different buyers have a Cert number that is only accessible at PCGS internally...

It’s really not fishy in these cases. He really doesn’t know what he’s talking about in these instances. They make one generic mock-up with a Cert that they know won’t be used for anything else. It’s not worth their time or practical for the to list thousands of the same things indivually

@baseball21 I'm not here to argue but the Cert number, according to PCGS customer service, is for a Silver Eagle. I understand that the big dealers can't list each and every slab individually. Just trying to cover my hide and dodge a return. Thanks for your response.

I know it is and it was wise to ask about it. I was just clarifying the other poster was giving you bad and inaccurate information. There are times when a bad Cert would be a major cause for concern, this instance isn’t one of them. If you search around the big boys sites especially for new products they may not have back yet you can find many more examples of the same things happening

I don't see any reason at all to avoid the Pinehurst Coins listing. It is from a reputable seller with 90k+ ebay transactions. There have been 14 of the item sold with 100% buyer satisfaction.

I would probably avoid the second listing of two coins (scratchmancards) simply because of the item description. Who uses that font? The ebay seller has been around since 2003, so a counterfeit arriving is probably not a concern. Plus, the ebay buyer protection would protect the buyer in the worst case scenario, right?

If anything, it's lazy and unprofessional to forgo contacting PCGS in order to find a number reserved for stock photos.

Thanks for the link! I bought the last one hoping it is fake. When I came back to read the rest of the thread I saw it was a stock photo.:(

I hope it is not genuine! I'll let you know when I get it. :D
