And we remedied (yeah, right) that a few years ago by instituting the highest fuel taxes in the land. Now the roads are getting better, but you still can't make any time because there's construction zones every few miles.
I grew up in a little town called Boalsburg... about 4 or 5 miles outside of State College. Dad's assignment there ended in 1957 and we were on our way to Paris. That area looked very mysterious when I returned there some 20 years later; it had all changed and not for the better.
I too! I sold and maintained high end above ground swimming pools for a few years in the mid 80's driving vermont,NY,And western PA, I do not remember the roads being that bad but do remember being told never to get caught speeding in PA by the super troopers.
Get Ready to RUMBLE ... as Silver continues it's steady upward climb ... it's upward ... it's .... well, I think it's going down now. So ... never mind.

We (California) are middle of the pack fuel tax wise at 38c/gallon. Due to all of the hybrid and electric cars here tax revenue for road maintenance was dropping so they added more fuel tax and higher registration fees. They are talking about a mileage based taxation system to make up for fuel efficient vehicles.
Yeah, it makes sense for the taxes supporting roads to be levied proportionately to the use of those roads. Gas taxes don't work on electric vehicles, and registration fees disproportionately hit vehicles that aren't driven much. But somehow "let the DMV keep track of every place I drive, how I get there, and how fast I go" seems to make people itchy...
Toll booths every mile and on every city corner! See, simple. Cash only, of course. Need to get the presidential dollars out somehow.
I often wondered why with alternate fuels and road wear being caused by actual total miles, we don't fund roads with a "tire tax".
well, maybe someone will come up with something really stupid like a bicycle tax. oh wait .. they did ... .https://www.citylab.com/transportation/2017/07/oregon-yes-oregon-just-put-a-tax-on-bicycles/532959/
that's for disposal. they need a Rebuild Our Roads tax ... speaking of tax, looks like silver is down
Funny you mention that. There is legislation to take scrap silver and pulverize it, and introduce it to the concrete and asphalt compounds. Because then, you know, they could say there's always a silver lining in your roads.
After UnderArmor started weaving silver thread into product to “fight bacteria”, I gave up. After all, one’s eyes can only roll so much before one gets dizzy and falls over.
