    Anonymous Coin #1
    Anonymous_Coin_1.jpg
    Hellenistic Kingdoms
    AR Tetradrachm, Rhodes mint, struck c. 201-190 BC, in the name and types of Alexander III ‘The Great’
    Dia.: 32 mm
    Wt.: 16.77 g
    Obv.: Head of Herakles right wearing lion skin headdress.
    Rev.: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ. Zeus seated left on throne, holding eagle and sceptre. Controls: monogram above rose in left field; PO below throne.
    Ref.: According to the seller: "Ashton 246; Kleiner, Rhodes, Series V; Price 2512 corr. (monogram)." Obverse die match to Ashmolean 2513.

    Why I included it in my collection:
    You know that coin with an absurdly low estimate whose real life price you can't possibly afford, but you're forced, absolutely FORCED, to put in an insultingly cheap bid because otherwise it simply won't let go of your throat? This coin's death grip on me came from its sheer size and artistry. In addition, I found that it was nothing like Price 2512 (as listed by the seller), but was instead a dead ringer for 2513 and 2514: 4-figure stunners signed ΔΑΝ by the Rhodian engraver Danaos(?) just behind the ear. (I have since discovered it is an obverse die match for the Ashmolean's 2513, which shares with the British Museum's example an unclear "N".) I laughed in the live auction as my final increment got blown away... except WAIT, it didn't get blown away...what, nobody else is bidding?!... only a few seconds left!.. OMG it's mine?!? :jawdrop:

    How the Game Works

    The object of the game is pretty simple: Guess which CT member the above coin belongs to out of the five participating members.

    @FitzNigel
    @Curtisimo
    @H8_modern
    @zumbly
    @Severus Alexander

    There will be 5 total game threads and at the end I will hold a drawing to select 5 winners from those who played the game. Participants can earn multiple chances to win based on the following rules.
    1. Guess who the owner of the coin is and give a reason why you think that. (Ex.: I believe that this coin belongs to Curtisimo because he likes that kind of ancient coin.) This is the minimum requirement for entry into the drawing. Please include a reason with your guess!
    2. Anyone who posts a photo of a coin along with their guess (related or not) OR gives a particularly well thought out or amusing reason why you guessed a certain person will receive an extra chance to win.
    3. Anyone who guesses correctly will receive an extra chance to win
    4. Anyone who is a young numismatist (age 18 or younger) will receive an extra chance to win. If you are a YN please say so in your entry post.
    In total there can be up to 4 chances to win for each member in each thread!

    Edit to add: Please feel free to participate even if you are not interest in winning a prize. You can designate a winner on your behalf or I can do so for you.

    Note to the volunteers: If you want to view the poll just vote for yourself on all the threads! Thank you.

    On this one I guess Severus Alexander because he wants everyone to blame his mother and because it is an Alexander coin. Of course you could be fooling us on this, but his current avatar is the one that looks closest to this kind of coin in my uninformed opinion.

    PS here's my coin...

    Excellent. Thank you both for being early participants! Great responses.

    As info to everyone I voted for myself in the poll but that is only so I can see the poll. It does not necessarily mean anything and I will do that for all the polls :)

    I selected zumbly because I believe he might be aware of and attracted to the signed die but would select the coin to fool those of us who would not expect him to select an Alexander as his representative. I will be dissuaded from this opinion when I see a coin posted that I believe actually is representative of the coins I know him to collect. This will be easier after we see all the coins from the five and can use a process of elimination. I am eliminating from consideration here people I believe might have been troubled by the bubbles in the surface and would fear they were signs of casting or otherwise offsetting the interest in the type itself.

    I don't have a good coin to post as a meaningful addition but I'll offer my favorite Alexander from Arados which has a secret much more nefarious than the surfaces of the contest coin.

    I believe it is Curtisimo's coin, because he likes these big flashy silver masterpieces. As for me I like these small, cheap flashy silver coins like this on of AP with temple of Augustus and Livia. 352.jpeg

    All five participating members could have this coin in their collection! I'm picking Curtismo based on "why I included it in my collection".

    byzantiumherc2.jpg
    Thrace, Byzantium. Pseudo-autonomous AE17. Hercules/Club of Hercules Obv: Hercules bust r.
    Rev: Club of Hercules. BYZANTIWN.
    E. Schönert-Geiss. Griechisches Münzwerk: Die Münzprägung von Byzantion dates this coin to the second century AD.
    Rare.

    I have no idea, but I will guess Severus Alexander. Although all of your participants have lovely coins, this one just seems to scream Severus (now how is that for reasoning?).

    First off thank for hosting this Curtismo! 8 love the animated graphics too. I am a YN (14) I am going to go with @Curtismo because I know he likes Greek silver (just look at his avatar!) I also love this coin and his avatar (I stole half of my avatar off of his featured thread!) And since he loves this coin and I love this coin great minds think a like right? EDIT: added photos.

    I'll guess Zumbly bought this coin, no particular reason other than he is now leading in the poll. I have no Greek coins to post, something I'm working on.
